Regular Season...

Good post. We have the same problems here, but they are not that bad, that I know about. I hear you about bow season. I am already looking forward to next September. In seven weeks of bowhunting I did not see anyone else hunting. The deer were calm and relaxed. Not now. Three weeks of firearms season left here. Not many people will be out now. Just the die hards for the most part. Looking forward to mz season. Too cold for most to deal with here, but not me. grin.gif I have only had run ins with a few slob hunters. Most were pretty cool. Guess I have been lucky.

Re: Regular Season...

I am excited and am sitting here in torture at college until later but I agree with you. Rifles shouldn't be allowed here, the ammo goes farther and when you have people who shoot at running deer, getting hit yourself is a risk. We have neighbors that get all their friends/relatives together and they push all the woods and shoot at deer running across the fields, usually wounding or missing them; I don't call shooting at a deer running full speed across a field ethical hunting. The neighbors are jerks but there is a slight rivalry that goes on,lol. When we see the neighbors go out, we hurry and get out so that the deer they chase come to us,lol! So it isn't al lthat bad but I agree with what ya say Jeff. Good luck to everyone and stay safe!

Re: Regular Season...

...and there it is! Thnaks Dave.

...This year has been very different for me. I am used to having 85 acres to myself for the duration of archery season, then having my cousins, brother, Uncle and Grandfather join in on the shotgun opener. Of course that tradition is now gone - in fact, I was the only one out this morning on the land we have left crazy.gif

I have been watching and listening to others about hunting and deer in general, and I must say, some of what I take in IS disturbing to say the least!

The county I live in is being overtaken by NY City people who discovered the living is cheaper than it is in Westchester County, so we are being flooded by Citiots! Most of the land is being locked down, deer fencing put up, etc. That leaves the population of hunters to look for more land, plus add in the Big City Hunters who want to "try it out". During gun season, we are packing too many guys into areas.

Like Dave said, we should love our brother hunters, cause after all, they are hunters, but I get annoyed when I go into Dick's 2 days before gun season to replenish supplies that I have been using for weeks and see guys in there buying "hunting clothes" and equipment last minute. The Blaze Orange Battalion gets me too. Have the respect for your quarry and "brothers" to be prepared well before the season! These are the same guys that may not confirm their target and beyond, might not know a deer's anatomy for a clean, ethical shot. Part timers... This is not their passion, yet I must share the woods with them and be cognicent that with each step on the ground, it may be my last. Heck, I have even started wearing a blaze orange hat!!!! UNHEARD OF!!!!! (by me at least!)

We get too much bad press each year, and most of it is outdated, like boozing. Heck, thats how the old timers kept warm! I have hunted alot - and never drank in the field, or hunted drunk! Sure we'll have a few afterwards, but I do see a problem with drunk hunters (visually, not morally!)

This is the first year that I have ever felt that hunting is truly in danger of being banned! Especially in Liberal NY.

Well, your county is certainly not alone in that situation. Here in Ontario County, we are definitely in that same mode. Our former city-dwellers turned rural come mainly from Rochester, but the effect is the same. Shiny new posted signs line the roadways and unfortunately they generally mean that this property is owned by an anti-hunter or, a hunter who has decided to lock up his land and reserve it for his hunting aquaintances. We have also seen the establishment of pay-to-hunt operations that lock up thousands of acres of prime hunting land that others used to count on. So, even with the shrinking hunter population, this has caused more and more people to be crowded on to less and less land. You know what?.....This is not going to get any better either.
