need2hunt
Howdy all!! I just got back last night, spent last week bowhunting and shotgunning down in Southern IL... I'm sure I have a ton of emails, etc... plus laundry, truck washing, all the things my wife thought of me to do while I was gone, etc... I'll get everything caught up by the end of the week as far as emails, pm's and updating the scores for the contest... my wife's list will take considerably longer to get done Anyway got to get going, I'll be back on later... need2hunt
Re: **Just got back... LOL @ U guys!!! We had some problems along the way but did end up with some deer... Our plans got changed as the place we were planning to bowhunt had some people from New York had leased it for 10 days and they were suposed to be gone but evidently they decided to stay longer... so I called my friend in Southern IL and asked if it was ok to come down a few days early and get some bowhunting in before shotgun season... temps where 50-60's while we were there and we saw over 100 deer for the 7 days we were there... Sue saw the largest deer which was a 12 pointer typical that would probably score in the 190's or higher, he was incredibly wide... that perticular deer was seen 3 times on the property but noone got a shot at him... past that we saw a good 10 pointer and several good 8 pointers... like the rest of the year we saw approximately 4 times more bucks than does... I know, I know, alot of poeple wish they had that problem. Both Sue and I missed bucks with our bows... she has a good excuse, I just plain missed For the first time in my hunting career I took long(er) shots with my shotgun. My doe was 85 yards, went through both front shoulders and she still went about 50 yards... my buck was about 150 yards slightly quartering away, bullet went in around the spleen (I think that's what Sue said it was) and then blew up his lung... Sue's buck (her first buck, well first deer for that matter) she shot through the neck at 15 yards, he had snuck up on us and was facing us, neck shot was all that was availaible and she dropped him where he stood... her doe was 20-30 yards and didn't go far either... She's put in alot of work this year and last and she's learned alot, I was happy to see her get her first couple deer. I'll get my journal updated sometime this week with all the details and also get some picks posted of the bucks we got hopefully today

need2hunt
Re: **Just got back... Here you go Chris... Sue's deer... 5 pointer, would have been 6 but had busted off tine on the one side... check station aged him at one but body wise he's a big one year old, I had guessed him at two... we were sitting in chairs just over the lip of a hill in a big (300 acre) grass field... I looked behind us and could just see the top of his back he had his head down and I could just see some tines... i turned to Sue and said (in the hunter's voice LOL) "There's a buck RIIIIGGGHHHTTT there!"... she slowly turned and was scanning the far hill behind us... I said "No, RIGHT THERE!"... She said "Where?"... and then he popped his head up... the expression on her face was priceless as she said "Ooohhh, there"... she just kinda kept staring and so I finally said "Are you going to shoot him?" LOL "He's looking right at us." She said as she slowly brought her gun up... he was facing head on and was only 15 yards... she put the sights on his neck and KABOOM! She gets her first deer!!! My buck is a six point... he's busted up a little too, I laughingly get to say that he's my droptine buck (it's about 1/4 of an inch and busted) Sue claims it's part of the main beam, but I'll just live in my world ... even though he doesn't have much of a rack, he was aged at 3 years old... It was the last day and after not seeing much from our spots we decided to do a couple small drives... Having hunted this property the last several years I've got a good feel for how the deer will move, this push worked to perfection... I set up by the barn as Sue pushed the section of grass, she found a deer trail with fresh tracks going the same direction she was and she followed them... she got within 15 FEET of him and the doe that was with him... I see them coming down the hill and got my spots picked out... the doe ended up sneaking down around the fenceline... while he came bouncing towards me... he stopped about 80-100 yards in a spot that i could shoot him but a car was coming down the road behind him... seems like everytime a car comes by and they see hunters orange in the field they slow way down to watch, so I had to wait... he of course wasn't going to wait and started up the valley in front of me... he was just over the lip of the hill and I could just see his antlers... he stopped a couple times and Sue's over there wondering why i haven't shot him yet... he finally crosses back onto the hill he came down... he's about 150 yards and stopped to look back toward where Sue was... I put the crosshairs on him and KABOOM... I saw him wince and new I had hit him but he kept going... I fired 2 more arrent shots and threw in another shell, he slowed down at the top of the hill, stopped and then went down like a bag of bricks... he went about 50 yards from where I shot him. oh ya, if I look a little on the worn down side, you try hunt, eat, sleep repeat for about 4 weeks straight and see how you look
