wtnhunt
When I was feeding the horse and cows yesterday, noticed several places in my tractor shed where these bees have been drilling. Also got holes in our decks, and in the kids swingset. Have not ever had them as bad as they have been so far this year. Just not sure what to use to stop them. Anyone out there have any suggestions on how to keep these things from boring into every wooden structure around.
Guest Andrea
Re: Carpenter bees Have no idea how to keep them from starting, but it's kinda fun to plug up the hole with tin foil once they're inside.

hutchies
Re: Carpenter bees Take some moth balls and use panty hose. Cut the panty hose into sections. Tie the end, fill with moth balls, tie the other end, Thumbtack of nail them to the wood. They won't come around. My grandma told me that and I tried it and it works great. You have to replace it every year.

Tominator
Re: Carpenter bees I wait until they go into the hole then blast them with the hornet spray. I wonder if some Sevin spray would deter them. I've seen a couple so far this year.
hutchies
Re: Carpenter bees If you wait til night and cauld the holes they will die. I can't remember what kind of caulk though. Some caulks they can chew thru. I wait til they go in at night and I have some bee killer that is a foam. I spray it right in their hole. StillLearnin
Re: Carpenter bees Dad has a lot around one of his sheds and he keeps an old tennis racket hanging near by, and if I didn't know any better I'd think he enjoys whacking those little buggers!! doughboy1956
Re: Carpenter bees Who gave them the name carpenter bees. Carpenters are involved in many different kinds of construction activity, from the building of highways and bridges, to the installation of kitchen cabinets. Carpenters construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures made from wood and other materials. Carpenter bees don,t construct, they destroy everything they touch, i would not hire them even if they were licensed in my Province.

snapper
Re: Carpenter bees We hired Terminex (sp)...not cheap, but with a log home, those bees have a field day. I was told...even if you kill the bee, you still need to plug the hole. They bore in the wood and leg and egg...seal the egg off...lay another...seal it off and so on. Don't know how many eggs they lay, but you need to plug the hole. Also, I was told (and if you watch them) they can't turn around in the hole...they go in forward and come out backwards, so if you plug the hole while they are in there...chances are they'll die in there. wtnhunt
Re: Carpenter bees Thanks for the tips everyone. Think I might try some liquid nails in the holes. Will also try the moth ball tip. [ QUOTE ] Who gave them the name carpenter bees. Dont know who came up with the name, but they sure leave a lot of sawdust where they drill.
Reloader
Re: Carpenter bees I always stick a small firecracker in the holes...not strong enough to break the wood but the compression will kill them and the eggs, and the sulfur smell keeps them from reusing it if they weren't there when you fired it off.
