I agree the Fine is Harsh...$100 dollars is alot these days to anyone.

They could have accomplished more by having you spend the day at a local hospital burn unit instead.

Ya..like a tank full of gas! blush.gifgrin.gif

Tank of gas Ken? nowadays it $100.00 would get you a 1/2 tanks! smile.gif LOL!!

As for covering up the smoke detector, not a smart move but I understand you not wanting to listen to it. $100.00 seems pretty steep for a college kid to pay but maybe they are making you the example. None the less you will probably never do it again and either will your friends as I am sure you have told them of your situation.

Re: This seems harsh

Well after spending 15 years in the fire service, and personally seeing what the outcome of a faulty or no smoke dectector can do! I think you got away cheap! Human life has no price! Besides, if they gave out warnings first, how many warnings will it be before an actual fire happens, then someone gets killed! The fine you got will travel around the dorm fast! It will tell everybody, "Hey! I better not cover this up!

I had something like that happen to me when I was in college.

What did you cover the smoke detector with??

Why.... would you cover the smoke detector? Man, it could save your life. confused.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Whoa, Whoa Trigger! I never covered a smoke detector but I had issues over something else that has a similar theme. Our smoke detectors were on the ceiling so I was simply curious what he covered it with since that is a tough place to cover something up.

Many college see little things as big problems. It is their sleazy way of generating more money from students. Don't get me wrong covering a smoke detector is wrong. But in my 7-1/2 years of college I saw students get hosed for every dime they have. Just ask a student what their college books cost per semester.

Re: This seems harsh

Well, it seems like a large fine and a small offense until someone in a dorm starts a fire---which happens a lot in apartments and dorms.

I would rest better knowing such things are being checked because while you didn't mean any offense, someone down below you might be covering it to mask who knows what.

I gotta side with the dean on this one.

I guess I got what I deserved, but I had no idea what I did was wrong. Anyone else got any fines they didn't think they deserved?

[/ QUOTE ]

I had a few when i was young and in denial. You say you got what you deserved and in the next sentence say you did,nt think you deserved it. But these simple acts of denial, refusing to think you deserved it, will not help you. You are young and we all make mistakes or we are not human. Hope we are not to hard on you but this could have resulted in a loss of life, even yours. Take it from this old guy who has been there and done that. wink.gif

No, I think you took what I said wrong. I believe I deserved to get in trouble. I see what coulda happened because of what I did, I don't think however that I deserve a 100$ for a first time offense. A warning would have worked just fine. I am in no way saying what I did was right, it was a simple goof up. I see kids get three and four warnings for having alcohol on school grounds with no fines, yet I got shelled for this. I agree with one post above....I am being made an example.

Exactly, you are being made an example of. How better to make sure that you or someone else doesn't do it again?

I know you think it is harsh but what are the chances that you will ever cover it up again? Unfortunately, you are in a place where hormones and alcohol dominate the day so common sense often goes out the window.

I know you probably didn't mean any harm but think of having to stand outside the dorm that burnt down with a bunch of kids in it and I think you will see that the fine was pretty leinient.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this one! Just a little common sense should have told you that covering the smoke detector could have caused a major problem!

I honestly believe you got by very cheap!

[/ QUOTE ]

I guess this is one of those ignorance is no excuse lessons. Have to agree with Orlan here. Learn your lesson from your mistakes.

I have had to deal with fire marshalls some working in health care maintenance. Had a fire marshall found it, the school could have potentially been tagged pretty hard for the tampering, or worse could have happened had a fire started there.
