Las Cruces, New Mexico

Anyone here from Las Cruces or El Paso? I am flying down there on Wednesday for a job interview. The plan is to move there late this summer or early fall. I see the housing has gone through the roof in the past couple years. It figures.

Wanna Bet he's checked on Resident Hunting License fees already....LOL

That would be a very safe bet! LOL! Living in elk country, resident license fees, oh yeah! Even if it is a lottery draw for tags. I can deal with that.

Thanks all for the hopeful thoughts.

Find a few acres in the country that qualify for a Landowner's Tag, then you can legally use the tag to hunt anywhere in that Unit. No draw involved. I've been semi looking for that type of arrangement for the past year or so.

You'll be in for culture shock. The hunting is several hours out of Las Cruces. The Gila for sure. Also up state around Chama. NM has good & bad about it. It's HOT there. CB

One good you'll be closer to God's Country-----COLORADO.

Thanks Bob, I would prefer Denver but its dead there for my work. This oppertunity will have some great possibilities for expansion in the future. I am gonig down there for 30 days in May-June to help get them going. Hopefully it will be tolerable. At least it will not be as humid as here.

Re: Las Cruces, New Mexico

I lived in Los Alamos for about a year and a half - I actually loved it there - a real outdoorsman's delight... Certainly mid- and northern NM have great wildlife populations... I only made it down to southern NM a few times (never to the Gila though) so I cannot comment on the hunting down there (anything other than rattlesnakes that is!).

If you are a trout fisherman, you absolutely must make time to go up to the San Juan in Farmington...

What is it exactly that you do, AJ? You seem like a pretty sharp guy, which indicates a strong educational background....

LOL! Thanks for the compliment. I am a senior satellite systems engineer. I am the lead engineer on my project. Right now, I fly satellites. We build instruction loads, send them to the satellites which basically programs the satellite, and monitor real time telemetry for the satellites state of health purposes. It's sort of like being a mechanic for a car but never getting to see or touch the car. The only thing you get to see is the gauges and instruments. I also test new software deliveries to ensure they meet our specs and demands.

Actually, I do not have a degree. After graduating high school, I went in to the Army. I was an electronic technician in the Intelligence field before I got into aerospace. I have worked on the Hubble Space Telescope, and a few defense programs. Most of the people I work with are degreed engineers with computer science, electrical engineers, aerospace engineering, and a couple math majors. I work with guys with Masters Degrees in Engineering, military guys, one guy flew F16s in the Air Force.

Las Cruces is a pretty cool place smile.gif

Definately put in for an Orys hunt on White Sands smile.gif (you'd be nuts not too)

Western Texas is pretty close and there are quite a few antelope there.

The Desert Mulies get mostly ignored cause everyones combing the mountains for elk wink.gif

Satellite Systems... Hmmm I remember when those guys were all about coding theory and algebraic error correction. Suddenly I feel much older.

Re: Las Cruces, New Mexico

AJ... I think you'll like Las Cruces! It's only an hour from El Paso and Juarez. LC is a college town with New Mexico State. And a great view west of town with the Rio Grande running thru it. El Paso is both a college town with University of Texas @ El Paso, and a military town with Fort Bliss Army Base.

El Paso boast as being the Sunshine capital of the U.S., not much rain but does get very hot and very cold!

Great hunting for deer, elk, and turkey about an hour northeast of Las Cruces in the Lincoln National Forest. And as was mentioned, Oryx hunting at White Sands Missle Base. About two hours west is the Gila National Forest and trophy elk.

Antelope are north about two hours, and east of Roswell. Great fishing at Elephant Butte, and trout fishing just about every where.

I've got relatives that live in Silver City, and have been going to New Mexico for about 50 years now. I think I just might retire out there in the next few years! It's got a lot to do if you and your family like the outdoors!

Re: Las Cruces, New Mexico

Sounds good guys! Thanks, I appreciate the detailed info. I was chosen to get the position, now its negotiating a release date in my present group. I am supposed to go down there for a month and return to VA before I transfer permanently. It's amazing on how a new job can change your outlook.
