Youth Hunter Bit By Turkey In N.Y.

The turkey bug that is. grin.gifThis weekend I took my 15 yr old nephew out on a youth hunt. What a time we had. Saturday morning we had 3 jakes within 20 yds but he did not take the shot because I did not see the birds untill it was to late and I told him not to shoot untill I told him it was ok. ( I did not want him to take a hen by accident). We left the woods by 8:00am because of wind and rain and went home for the day where he reminded me 1000 times I cost him a chance at his first bird. So on sunday we went back to the same spot and saw several hens but no jakes or toms. He was really disappointed and so was I but I was bound to get him a bird. We went to another spot where I saw a few birds before but after a hour and a half we saw and heard nothing. As we headed back to my truck with my tail between my legs I happened to look up and there they were 6 birds 75 yds ahead of us. We took a quick set-up and started calling. After no more than 5 min we had all 6 birds gobbling and coming in on a rope. Set up 15 yds behind my nephew I had 5 jakes come in between me and him and they were gobbling in his ear. He kept his cool and kept his red dot on the head of the huge garbage bag strutting through the woods and at 6 yds he laid the big tom out flat dead. At 11: 53 am my nephew killed his first bird a 21# 8 1/2 inch beard 3/4 inch spur bird. All with 7 min left in the 2006 youth season.

Marc

P.S. thanks go out to Hook's mouth calls and Williams Custom Calls for a great hunt that will last a lifetime for my nephew.

A big congratulations goes out to Marc and Travis on their sucessful hunt.

I'm not sure who was the most excited. Maybe me, when they stopped to show me the Trophy. Also Trav's dad was pretty proud too. [ he called a taxidermist to have the bird mounted] They drove around for hours showing off the bird.

Now Travis can't wait for the regular season.

I am pleased to have a son who wanted to take his nephew [ my grandson] hunting. Oh yea! He's bit alright. smile.gif
