Rossting birds tonight

I'm going to try to go out tonight and find where those birds on the state land are roosting. Will the toms gobble when they go to roost? Should I use an owl call if I don't hear any gobbles? I am going to the spot where I found alot of sign on Sunday so they've got to be in there. The state land has some private lan fields around it so I figure it is a good spot to be to catch turkeys going in and out of the fields. I hope this is the year! cool.gif

Re: Rossting birds tonight

Ruth sometimes they will gobble on the roost but they don't come close to doing the gobbling activity while going to roost late in the afternoon like they do when they wake up on the roost in the morning. Just because you don't hear a bird gobble on the roost in the afternoon doesn't mean they aren't there so don't be disapointed. Here at home, more often than not the birds don't gobble hardly at all late in the day on the roost no matter what you use to try to get them to shock gobble. That's just the way these Eastern turkeys are around here. Texas Rios are sure more apt to accomodate you with late afternoon roost gobbling activity though. That's they way they are.

For instance one afternoon this spring we did get a bird to gobble (only twice) when he was roosted before dark. The next morning we were set up to work him and we heard a total of 6 different birds gobbling when they woke up on the roost. The last one to crank up was the bird we had roosted the prior afternoon.

The classifieds? Wow, I am really out of it,lol! Thanks Rhino. I did go out last night, founds lots of scratchings in the same hardwoods area, didn't hear any birds htough but I am going back tomorrow morning because I'm hoping they'll gobble a bunch since they seem to do that more in the morning. I did find an old 3 point shed on the way back out to the car, actually about 5 yards from the car, lol.
