popgun
Saving Gasoline: Some California Researchers have gone out into the desert and made some tests. According to what Business Week Online Edition had to say today, it is either a very substantial amount, or there is something wrong with their mathematics. They report that a driver can save 19% of their gasoline by turning off the engine while waiting any period of time: (long train, picking kids up at school, carrying on a conversation etc.) They report that a driver can save 37% by not making frequent stops and starts, quick starts, or excessive acceleration. Another 11% can be saved by using the cruise control and driving at 65 instead of 75 mph. 19% +37% +11% = 67% If gas is $3.00 per gal., then 67% of that is $2.01 which would be saved. Now, $3.00 per gallon minus the $2.01 savings makes a total spent for gas only $.99 per gallon. Federal and State taxes on gasoline are a little over $ .40 per gallon here, which actually makes the gasoline cost only $ .59 per gallon. If my math is correct, I can still afford to drive at only $ .59 per gallon. Wow… I had no idea that gasoline was so cheap, or that we were in such good financial condition. I think it’s time to take a road trip. ….popgun

Shaun_300
Re: How to save gasoline: Yep, the prices are pretty crazy alright! I have tried to adjust my driving habits a bit, but I am a natural heavy foot, I like driving fast, I like taking off quick, shifting at high RPM's, etc. Typical 19 year old I guess... On a serious note, I have adjusted my driving a bit. I shift gears at lower RPM's, try to drive a bit slower on the highway (That's a hard one to do ) and I've started carpooling with a guy I work with that lives 1/2 mile away. We have to go 16 miles each way to work, so why not drive together? We alternate weeks, he drives one week, I drive the other. It's amazing how much you save! Exturkinator
Re: How to save gasoline: I tried my own small-scale version of such a test 2 months ago by changing my driving habits (though not quite as radical as that described). I basically drove like a grandma - accelerated slowly, drove the speed limit or less at all times, coasted down hills, avoided dead stops/starts, shift at lower rpm, etc - the absolute best I did was improve my gas mileage by 2-3 miles per gallon... I was a little surprised that I couldn't do better than that?
