kooter
We just signed our 4 year old daughter up for riding lessons. Anyone else have any experiences with this for kids. She is totally infatuated with horses so I know she will like it. This is her on vacation last summer in colorado [image][/image]
unioncountyslayer
Re: horse riding lessons Congrats! I think horse riding lessons for kids is great. My wife and I have 3 horses (American Saddlebred). The barn where we board them has lessons for kids and a summer camp. It's fun and it teaches them responsibility. It can however get expensive! Jeramie
Re: horse riding lessons One very important thing... If you decide to buy her a horse do not buy her a "PONY." Seriously. She will get hurt way faster on a pony then anything else. Stay away from Welch's and shetlands. Your best bed would be either a older quarter horse mare (say 14-hands tall) or a gelding. Their temperment is far better. I grew up on horses and still have 4. If you chose the right ones they are like 1000+ lb dogs. They are great to have around! I bet she does and will enjoy them for years to come!
OJR
Re: horse riding lessons I agree about the Shetland ponies! They are the most unpredictable critter there is!! I am sure she is going to enjoy herself!
kooter
Re: horse riding lessons her grandparents have 2 horses that she helps take care of when we go out there. she says she wants 14 when we move out into the country. I told her we would start with one and go from there.
Turkeygirl
Re: horse riding lessons Well sometimes most girls fall in love with horses when they are young and then kind of grow out of it. If you think she really wants to learn to ride and is going to be a horsey lover for awhile, just try to make sure, if you are going to buy her a horse, that she is serious and the responsibility. Too many people buy horses for their kids who then grow out of it and the horse gets neglected. I'd definitely say start with an older horse that is "bomb proof". Good luck and I hope she has fun! stevebeilgard
Re: horse riding lessons first, stop calling that **** thing a horse. it's a pony, and ponies kill kids! get her on a real horse. and yes, the idea is great

BamaTrophyHunter
Re: horse riding lessons me and my brother had two shetland ponies when we were little and they ALMOST never did anything wrong. we would chase the dogs around and jump off to try to steer wrestle the dog and the ponies would stop and come back to us. one day the one i was riding turned off the trail while we were loping and a pine limb hit me right in the chest and knock me off the back of the pony. i layed there a minute with my eyes closed and when i opened them he was standing right beside me looking at me. I would highly recommend getting a horse for your daughter. A quarter horse gelding 10yrs+ they will be alot calmer. gelding will be better than a mare unless you plan on raising some horses. wtnhunt
Re: horse riding lessons Nice pic. My two older kids both ride. We currently only have one horse, but will likely get another one this fall.
