What gun?

Re: What gun?

I don't know what the military snipers are using today, but during the Vietnam era the snipers were issued several different rifles.

When I ran the gun pool at Subic Bay I would take in the weapons used by the Navy Seals, SeaBees and the Marines when they came there for R&R.

Most were reissued to the same man when he was ready to return to duty. Most had become accustomed to their weapon and did not want a different one.

Most were M14 in 7.62

(M14NM) using a Remington action.

Most of the M14NM's were converted to an M21 or XM21.

Whenever we received a new Winchester Model 70 in .308, it was quickly issued to the lucky Sniper that wanted it. I think they had a 26" barrel. We couldn't keep them in inventory long, so it must have been a real favorite of the valiant men using them.

The .308 would shoot the 7.62 ammo also because there is relatively no difference in that and the .308.

Sorry I can't be of more help in answering your question.

At that time I was more interested in keeping up with stock numbers on parts than I was in the specifics of each rifle.

It was a stressful job because it only took a few parts to come up missing for an instant trip to Leavenworth.

To say the least, I was glad when I was promoted and transferred to a different warehouse.

Re: What gun?

There were some good shows on the discovery channel a year or so ago or maybe longer than that about snipers and about their rifles, they probably air the same shows from time to time.

Think they said a lot of swat and police sharpshooters still use a custom .308 based on the remington model 700's action if I remember right.

Re: What gun?

I just thought I'd throw this " blast from the past " in since I'm Lee Enfield fan .

Here's the sniper rifle of the Brit. Commonwealth ( Canada included ) from WW11

No4 Mk1"T" .303brit

Then later Enfield redesigned the No4 to the 7.62nato

L42A1

Now these rifles cost way too much for me , but I did try to copy the No4T....so far , the furthest target available to me is 300yd , which is no prob for this rifle . Incidently , this rifle was made by Savage/Stevens in 1943 for the war effort .

Re: What gun?

they are still using the winchester or remingtons and they do some changes but they shoot standard load for the military. it is not a magnum type of rifle. though over the years they have learned little tricks and if i remember right it is the sniper who hanfles the type of work needed for his rifle
