Turkeygirl
Re: NY Opener Tomorrow!! Well I've got my gun ready and vest packed but I'm still not sure where I'll be hunting in the morning. I've got two choices: hunt the farmland near my house where I know there is a bearded hen and where this is one gobbler who plays hard to get. I'm going to take a walk this afternoon and see if I can find him. My second choise is the hunt the piece of state land where I've found a ton of sign but I'm not sure where they are roosting and when they move through. It's a nice spot with open hardwoods ridge, old logging trail where all the sign is that leads to an overgrown field of private land. I may have to contend with other hunters, but tonight I am thinking of going over to see if I can roost turkeys. Either way I can only hunt until about 8am/8:30am because of college. Any one have any suggestions about which place to hunt?
western NY bowhunter
Re: NY Opener Tomorrow!! Man what a morning...I ended up hearing 16-17 different gobblers between 3 locations that I hunt. The ole crow calls sure was getting 'em fired up. Needless to say, I'm totally pumped about tomorrow morning!!!!!!!! Me and my dad went out to the local wine company property where we planned on hunting at first light this morning and were greeted with non-stop gobbling from 5:30 until we left at 6:00 . In all...we heard between 10-12 birds on both sides of the road...with 7 or 8 of them being on the property we can hunt. I'm gonna go after the ones on the lower side of the road and he's going on the upperside after a particular mouthy bird that I've heard all 4 times that I've scouted here in the past week. I'm still trying to work up the nerve to take the blind and my new Bowtech with me...but am still undecided a this point. Anyways, it should be an exciting opening morning with a really early wake up call in order to beat a couple of other guys there. With any luck I'll be hauling 20 lbs. + of Finger Lakes gobbler back to the truck with me (I ended up with several real close calls and a tag sandwich last spring). Here's a little scenery of where I'll be hunting tom. morning. Hopefully, I'll be able to top my little bro's 22 pounder he got there opening day last spring. Good luck to the rest of you NY turkey hunters out there!
VermontHunter
Re: NY Opener Tomorrow!! If it was me.... I'd be after that bearded hen, since I would already know of it's location, and hunting time is on the short of time... ,, but either way if there is a hen around a Tom or Jake can't be far away.. GWSmith
Re: NY Opener Tomorrow!! So Ready I cant Sleep!!! Went out this afternoon on some local state forest land and took the GPS. Coordinates are set...but Roosted...aint Roasted...Yet Checked out the area near where I sighted in my Muzzleloader and heard some gobbling while I was shooting. Found some birds on the roost just about dusk. Couple very soft yelps and a purr on the slate and I got BOOMED...2 maybe 3 birds sounded off leaving No doubt where they'll be in the morning. Problem is which way they'll fly down. Their on a small saddle on a ridge with 2 separate areas on each side they could fly down to. It will be a 50-50 chance because they could fly down to one side that would be accrossed a creek. It will depend on which way the girls go I'll be on the side where they wont have to cross the creek to get to me and about 125 yards away at the edge of an open area that funnels down on one end. I should be able to see them in the tree and watch which way they go from where I'll be setting up. If they fly down accrossed the creek....I'll be getting wet before the sun has risen all the way Their getting Hunted in the morning

western NY bowhunter
Re: NY Opener Tomorrow!! Score one for the team!!!!! I got lucky and killed a nice 20.5 pounder with a 9.5" beard and 1" spurs at 5:55 this morning. It was a short/sweet hunt with lots of gobbling. This hunt was especially rewarding since I had some inconsiderate hunter park next to my truck and come down and set-up about 70 yds. from me. The inconsiderate hunter came walking all the way down to the woods with a flashlight at 5:00. Thankfully, mr. big boy didn't see his light and liked the sound of my woodhaven mouthcall and the real hen calling behind me. I'll post pics, a little later.
