VermontHunter
Well I hit the woods at the farm around 5:00am this morning and got setup, Im getting better at my Doghouse Blind.... ,,, I was expecting to be surrounded by other hunters before light but none showed, maybe they are getting the hint finally... Just as daylight broke I let out a couple nice sharp Yelps and went silent, I would say in about 15 min. I had 4-5 hens fly down about 50 yrds away from me and start feeding and purring.... So I held off on any calling in hopes the would bring in the Tom I roosted the night before, they fed for about another 15 min. moving away from me the whole time, now I'm getting nervous, yep sure enough they drop over the rise in the meadow, and start yelping and sure enough I see another bird fly down below the rise and start gobbling..... I tried for over 3 hrs to sway them in my direction but they would have none of that,, dang hens ran off with my Tom....never to be seen again... So I sit there drinking a nice hot cup of Java and happen to look out of the blind window to see 5 nice big doe's standing there feeding.... I must have watched these doe feed for over an hour.... All in all I would say I had a great morning even tho I didn't bag a Turkey,,, but hey it's about being out there anyway right ?... Here's few photo's I took while out on my morning at the farm....Hope you enjoy them.... Here's what a frosty morning looks like in Vermont.... A couple senery shots of my hunting land.... Here's what came out to greet me after the hens ran away with my Tom.... On my way out this guy thought he would be cute,, he keeps it up and he's going to be a goner... And a picture of my dirty truck parked in front of the equipment shed... I didn't get any pictures of the Turkey's in fear of spooking them off.... I honestly can say I had a real peaceful morning and enjoyed every moment of it if tho I didn't get a Turkey, I hope everyone enjoyed the photo's and had better luck with the Turkeys than I did.... VTbowman
Re: No Turkey, But what a BLAST Ahhh.... I know that field well... LOL I am surprized you did not set up in that lower corner we used last year. That just seem like the spot to be IMHO. You looked like you were on the top above the sand pit area judging by the pics... (???) Anyways, I am glad to hear you actually saw turkeys this year. LOL Good Luck on your future hunts! VermontHunter
Re: No Turkey, But what a BLAST [ QUOTE ] You looked like you were on the top above the sand pit area judging by the pics... (???) [/ QUOTE ] I circled around the pit,, and was using the corn spoilage as a draw,, and sure enough the hens flew just short of it in the meadow about 30 yrds in front of me.. They only thing that went wrong is they fed away from me and the setup, and dropping over the rise in the meadow, drawing that Tom right along with them... Yep, I saw Turkeys, but the gobbling was nill to none... and a hen haven...

VTbowman
Re: No Turkey, But what a BLAST Seems like they prefer that spoilage early and then make for the thicker trees and deep bank of that other side. May I suggest setting up along that far edge about where you were that one day you had the bear walk behind you. By those pines nand cedars... They always seem to walk that direction eventually... VTbowman
Re: No Turkey, But what a BLAST LOL By looking at that field thats the last place anyone would choose but we have seen them alomst everytime go that route when they leave the field so go with it! Good Luck!
VermontHunter
Re: No Turkey, But what a BLAST I don't know what they find so special over there.... ,, all there is is a steep bank with a big brooke at the bottom.. But that seems to be their escape route.... I just can't seem to figure out where they dissapear to so quick.... I thought Turkeys didn't like to cross water.... VtBowhunter
Re: No Turkey, But what a BLAST I took my oldest son Dakota out for his first ever hunting trip where he's the hunter, and I put a huge jake in front of him at 7 yards.......he missed, but the whole thing was priceless, and I was so proud of the way he handled the miss. He grabbed another shell from me, and said "I missed......Let's go find another one", lol. At 7 yards the shot hadn't spread yet, so it was like a slug coming out of the gun, and it destroyed a sapling right next to the bird. Had them going nuts down here.......Saturday is my first day off so that's when I get out for "Big boy" season.
VermontHunter
Re: No Turkey, But what a BLAST You have to LOVE the reactions of the youngsters.. I only got to hunt on Monday, today was rainned out, and had alot on the plate as well.. I had a bunch of hens in front of me , with the apparence of one Tom by the means of a fly down, and then it was off with the real ladies..... My tagging a bird again this year doesn't look good, but that first day sure felt good... Good luck to ya,, and hope you put a good spanking on a monster with that bow...
