Guest littlered
I found a gun at the local sport shop. its a savage 7mm rem. mag left handed. stainless steel synthetic stock 26" barrel. for sights it has a nikon 4.5-14-?buckmaster the gun cost $585. what do you think? is it a good deal? i'm 70% sure i'm going to get it i just wanted to check with you all first. any comments would be great help thanks
johnf
Re: First mag.... maybe The gun is $480 special order at walmart and the scope is $279 at bass pro. That's $759 for the scope and gun. I would bet you won't find a gun listed less than wally world. $585 sounds like a pretty darned good deal for the set.
snapper
Re: First mag.... maybe You didn't mention what model it was...but I'm guessing its a model 116FLSS Weather Warrior left handed? If so, dealer cost is around $410 and the Nikon is around $226, add a few dollars for silver. Thats $636 dealer cost...I'm guessing this gun is used? If its in good shape...I'd say its prob. worth $585.
OJR
Re: First mag.... maybe The only problem that I can see is that it is a 7mm Mag! I had one of those and couldn't get rid of it fast enough!!
Guest littlered
Re: First mag.... maybe i'm alomost certian that it's not a Weather Warrior. i'll call them up and see what it was. i have a question for OJR: whats wrong with a 7mm rem mag? OJR
Re: First mag.... maybe I couldn't get any real good accuracy out of a Browning A bolt and then I shot an elk at just over 200 yards using 160 gr. Nosler Partition bullet! Hit a rib going in and it wiped out the off shoulder completely! Bullet blew up! That same year, 2 other guys were using 7mm Mag's in camp and they both hit an elk and we never found them! All 3 of us got rid of the 7mm Mag's and went back to 270's, 30-06' and 308's and have not any problem since. I did have to take 2 shots on an elk with the 308, but that was my fault and not the caliber or the gun! I won't even look at a 7mm Mag. made by anyone! Guest Colorado Bob
Re: First mag.... maybe littlered-----I think I would pass on it. You didn't say if it thad the new accu-trigger. If it doesn't you'll need to put a new trigger on the gun. Also IMO Savage will shoot real well but they are butt ugly. IMO the scope will need to replaced---I'm a Leupold guy. Only 2 scopes I would think about would be a VX-II or a Nikon Monark. I don't think it's a red hot deal----plus I don't think you could get your money out of it if you resale. As far as a 7mag----they are OK. Lots of elk are killed by them every year. Ammo is a little more expensive & you'll need to use a premium bullet for elk. Deer any bullet will work. I like the 30 cal. I use a 30/06 & never had a problem plus cheap ammo is everywhere. If I were to conside a mag---it would probably be a 300 Win Mag or the 300WSM. Keep looking you'll find a used Remington 700 LH or better yet a Tikka Whitetail LH. Good luck CB OJR---welcome back long time since I've seen you post here. Guest Xen
Re: First mag.... maybe hmm, i absolutely love my 7mm mag and wouldn't consider any caliber but that for hunting big game. i could spend hours talking about 1 shot kills, etc. long range, short range, whatever. good thing there are a wide range of calibers, makes it easier for people to find what they like. yooperkenny
Re: First mag.... maybe The 7mm Rem Mag is a versatile round that shoots as flat as a .270 and hits as hard as a 30.06. Read AJ's Cartidge of the Week entry for it. It's killed many elk and moose, and is the choice of many deer hunters as well. You just have to find the ammo it likes and practice, practice, practice... Nikon is fine glass, and the Savages have a reputation for great out of the box accuracy. The price seems pretty good for a package like that. If it's used, check it out carefully You'll get differing opinions but only you can decide... do you plan on ever heading out west for elk or into Canada for da moose? And bottom line, can you really ever have too many guns?
too_pointer
Re: First mag.... maybe I owned a 7mm mag for quite a few years, and think highly of it. I also have a Nikon 4.5x14 buckmasters on my 25-06, and I'm plenty impressed with that also. Myself, I see no good reason not to buy it if thats what you want. too_
Guest PAdeerdreamer
Re: First mag.... maybe My father swears by his 7MM mag. He has hunted from Pennsylvania to Alaska.Deer,bear,Mt.goat you name it.He took one Mt.goat at 400+yrds.It's got a leupoled 4-12 on it and nothing but nosler coming out of it. Guest littlered
Re: First mag.... maybe CB, i know i'd love to have a remington 700 with a Leupoldon top but i'm only 14 and can't afford somthing that nice. at $585 i'm pushing the amount that i can afford right now. i'll have to wait until i get a better job to get a gun of your standard. as soon as i can get one i'll get it but until then i'll have to stay under $
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: First mag.... maybe littlered-----What are you using now? Can you use it a couple more years & then get what you want rather than what you can get? CB I got my 700 when I was 16---that was 35 years ago---it's toped with a Leupold VarX-III 2 1/2 x 8. Heck, I'm tempted to let it go for $585.
Reloader
Re: First mag.... maybe That is a sweet deal IMO...have you ever fired one before though? The recoil on those is managable with a good recoil pad but it is rather punchy even then. If you are planning to hunt anything bigger than deer I would go for it without hesitation, as long as it has been fully checked...ask the seller how they got it. If you trust the shop and they tell you it was an honest trade, someone wnated to upgrade or whatever then go for it...sometimes though those guns get traded in to the shop because they have problems and they never tell the shop because they don't want their trade in to get marked down! Guest littlered
Re: First mag.... maybe i shot it and didn't even notice the recoil. i'm so used to shooting my 12 gauge that it actually felt nice. I trust this shop with my life. they have always been respectable and have never lead me in the wrong way. besides that i have family that works there so i'm always taken care of CB my 870 is what i am using for deer right now and i really don't like the limited range of it
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: First mag.... maybe I've got the Savage 116 stainless/synthetic in 7 Rem Mag. I think I gave $225 for it used (bare rifle) then added a Leupold scope, rings and bases. It didn't have the adjustable trigger so I had my gunsmith do a custom trigger job on it. The recoil was pretty severe so I also had him port the barrel. Recoil is now negligable and I really like not losing my sight picture when the round goes off. I think that seeing the round hit the target through the scope is very beneficial. Off of sandbags with factory ammo I'm shooting 2 inch groups at 200 yards and 4 inch groups at 400 yards. I get my best results from Winchester Ballistic Silvertips in 140 gr. Somewhat unusual for a 7 mag to like 140 gr bullets, most like 150 - 160 gr. loads. Good luck!
