Texan_Til_I_Die
We've all seen this picture and felt the pain of seeing the symbol of this great nation disrespected by people who are nothing better than law breakers. Let me tell you another story about Mexicans and flags. It was the Fall of 1835 and two companies of volunteer riflemen crossed the border from Louisiana into Texas. Called the New Orleans Greys because of their distinctive uniforms, the volunteers had come to fight for the rebellious Republic of Texas. Now the arrival of the reinforcements was greatly welcomed by the Texans, and to show their appreciation, they presented the volunteers with a flag made of blue silk with the likeness of an eagle, wings spread, and below the eagle the words, "First Company of Texan Volunteers from New Orleans." The riflemen carried the flag to San Antonio and the Alamo mission where rebels were preparing to defend their position against the Mexican Army. The flag fell, along with the 189 brave defenders on March 6, 1836. No one thought the flag had survived until 1934 when the flag was discovered in a drawer in the Mexican National Archives by a visiting Texas official. Since that time, every Governor of Texas, plus at least one U.S. President, President George W. Bush, has requested that this important historical artifact be returned to Texas for display at the Alamo. And each request has been flatly refused. Instead, the Mexican government has kept the flag locked away from view while it's condition steadily deteriorates. If it isn't recovered soon, the damage will likely be irrepairable. Likewise, if the flood of illegal immigrants from Mexico is not stopped soon, the damage to this country will likely be irrepairable. popgun
Re: Of Flags and Immigrants Santa Ana's leg went north. Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna could be lucky in war, notably at the Alamo, but he had a problem with food, and it was notable. He lost his leg in the French Pastry War, fought between France and Mexico in 1838. His personal heroism in battle resulted in having several horses shot out from under him, and the loss of half of his left leg. Then in 1842 he arranged for an elaborate ceremony to dig up the remains of his leg, and to parade with it through Mexico City Afterwards was placed on a prominent monument for all to see. Then in 1847, facing the United States at the Battle of Cerro Gordo in Mexico, he stopped paying attention to the war long enough to savor a roasted chicken. His lunch was interrupted by the uninvited, unexpected regiment of Illinoisans, who ate the general's chicken and carried off his new cork leg. Santa Anna hobbled away to fight another day. Some of the soldiers returned to Piatt County, where the town of Griswold was renamed Cerro Gordo in commemoration of the battle. The Volunteers regiment would eventually become the Illinois National Guard, and its trophy of war, Santa Anna's cork leg, now resides in the Guard's museum, Camp Lincoln in Springfield. Over the years, the Mexican government has asked for Santa Anna's leg back. Not that it would do the general any good, though it might show a little sensitivity. Artificial legs aren't as funny as they were in the 1850s, when veterans charged a nickel or a dime for curiosity seekers to handle the leg in hotel bars. (Maybe we can talk the Illinois National Guard into making a trade.) Santa Ana's Leg for one flag. ....popgun

Canadian_Goose
Re: Of Flags and Immigrants well buckee, technically they would lose a leg....
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Of Flags and Immigrants I'd take that trade. And that flag is a reproduction that was created from memory by those few Americans that have seen the flag. BTW - I'm not sure I would credit Santa Anna with too many heroics. The Army of the Republic of Mexico won exactly 4 battles while he was in command.
Yellowhammer
Re: Of Flags and Immigrants Talking about captured flags, during The War Between the States the invading Yankee Army captured alot of Confederate Battleflags and sent them North into yankeeland. Several of these flags are still in Northern States, over the years people from the South have tried to get these flags returned to the rightfull state for which they belong to but, they have not seceded. So why hold onto these flags after all these years? I think that the Northern states still holds a grudge against the South. Maybe Mexico still holds a grudge against the USA. But then again, the spoils of war goes to the victors. If the Northern States keep the Confederate flags then I say let Mexico keep this flag.
