Thunderous gobbling unlooked for...!!! (long)

Where do I begin?

Ok.

9am.

Just got off a 12 hour night shift and an hour commute home. Only thing on my loopy mind was a dark room, running fan, and soft pillow.. smirk.gif LOL

I pull into the long driveway and see a lone hen about 200+ yards away down the woods line out in the green field playin in the mistly-drizzle rain..

I get out of the truck and hit a mouth call I have to see if I get any reaction.

"Why?" I think.

They never do so why should this be any different?

Waaay off in the distance, way up behind my house and ober the back hill I hear a faint gobble.

"COOL!" cool.gif

I never get any response to my mergar attemps at diaphram mouth calling.

I go inside not thinkin to much about it.

I am spent from work and little sleep all week long.

I go out on the back deck for one last yelp before hitting the sack to see if I can raise him again. Bamb! shocked.giflaugh.gif

He cuts me right off and is a lot closer! cool.gif

This is where the loopy brain kicks in. I have roughly 6 hours to grab for sleep before going back in for another 12 hour night shift.

So what do I do?

I run downstairs to throw on anything I can find for camo. smirk.gifgrin.gif LOL

(My brand new set of Predator Spring Green is out on the back deck dretched.. crazy.gif)

I go to grab the shot gun and its in 3 pieces hanging in the furnace room, taped up everywhere, and no butt plate. shocked.gifcrazy.gif

I just gave it a camo job and it was drying overnight (day for you day shifters)

D-oh! shocked.gifcrazy.gif

I frantically put it together like some guy off some military camp show not even thinkin about it, it just flows together..

I grab my slate call and 4 shells and runout, mouth call still in place.

I get up past my mowed section of our back yard and hit the "super thicket" as I call it. A tangled mess of thick cedars and black berry bushes.

I wade threw this to find a spot right on my back property line and start calling...

Bamb!

Gobbles galour! shocked.giflaugh.gif

Hard to tell but sounds like I have a group of 3 way on top of the hill and another coming from my right..

This is where it get frustrating...

I find that turkeys do not like to come downhill to calling no mater how hard they are gobbling and how hot they sound.

They cut off every little peep I make. With authori-ta!

Funny thing is they did not respond at all to my Primos "The Freak" slate call, only to my mouth callin!

Interesting... cool.gifsmirk.gif

Well I keep checking my watch knowing damm well I NEED to sleep but man I got thundering gobblers closing in!

What to do?

What to do?

"Stay put you dumb arse..." I decide.. LOL

I try to find a way to close the gap but I really dont want to cross the posted signs the guy has up so I stay put.

I call-they answer, I dont call-they gobble like crazy.

They were fired up but I suppose the terrain simply foiled me since they would not commit.

I had them within 50yards but my cedar woods and thicket are so thick I would be been lucky for a 25 yard shot..

12pm rolls around and I had to call it quits.

Not legal after 12 and I am just plain tired..

I walk away to the house with 3 gobblers still hammering away behind me.

Just did not seem right... crazy.giffrown.gif

Talk about heart pounding fun!!!! cool.gif

BTW I got in 3 hours of sleep before the family came home fromschool and work..

Now I must endure the long night... frown.gif

Can't wait for this week!!!!!

Luke I can not explain the feeling when they gobbled right near me. I mean the literal "feel" of the sound vibrations were intense!

They were very close.

My set up would of been much different if I had no posted sign to deter me..

I do not think of this as a failure at all.

I got to call in multiple turley via mouth calling and they came to me like they should of.

It was sweet!

I definately wouldn't either..... wink.gif

I definately didn't consider mine a failure also,,, I had the right setup,, the hens just didn't coperate and stick around quite long enough...and competeing with live real hens isn't what Im quite ready for yet... wink.gif

I will say this tho..... we be definately getting better at this game..... wink.gif

But it's still a crazy thing...... grin.gif

I know to those who read this are saying whats the big deal.

It is to me since I am still sorta rookie, not once calling in a bird before no less via mouth call and gaining the tons of experience on doing so...

My 1st season was basically guided by Vtbowhunter and we slammed me 2 jakes in less then 40 minutes. On 2 consecitive mornings.

2nd season I hunted the top half of our state which is not known for its mass turkey flocks and I was skunked all year. Not once even hearing a gobble!

This is my 3rd season and its lookin bright!

Not at all Shawn. The sound of an up close and personal gobbler or gobblers that are gobbling their heads off is an awesome experience. Especially with Eastern turkeys because their gobbles are so much coarser and louder to boot than a Rio or a Merriam. As you know from your experience when they get that close it sounds like their gobbles just echo across the ground. Now just wait until one starts drumming up close and so loud your insides feel like they are vibrating. grin.gif

BTW, thanks for sharing your true feelings about your great day turkey hunting. Hope one pokes his head out for you next time. wink.gif

I swear they were close.

I could "feel" thier gobbling on my chest and coat. LOL

It was amazing how loud...

Here I though they were close and now I see they were not until they DID get close. LOL

Thanks all...

Re: Thunderous gobbling unlooked for...!!! (long)

Shawn, I'll try to get one so close this weekend that you'll feel the ground shake under you when he gobbles. That's what it was like with the last one I shot.

Remember one thing about last year.......Vermont's season was bad all over, so disregard the bad from last year. With the mild winter this year, and the way these things breed, you guys are finally in for some great turkeys up your way in the next few years.

Man I hope so...... And I have to agree Josh last year Turkey hunting in the Northeast in general wasn't great at all...

I know I seeing lots of birds on the farm and hearing lots of Gobbling,,, it just my lack of experience that's hurting me this year,, competeing with live hens, is just out of my league.... frown.gif

Come on Luke give your self a little credit.

Your not totally clueless...

-just partially.. shocked.gifsmirk.gifwink.gif LOL

I know that the other day was something that has not happen EVER around my house so I agree that the birds are really starting to multiply up here.

Hopefully one day, in a few years, I must have you up Josh to help thin them out.. wink.gif

You still owe me a couple doe shot via your bow...

Man now those things are like roaches around here. crazy.gifsmirk.gifcool.gif

LOL
