LETMGROW
Care was the advice from my Extension Agent in regard to soybean seed. He told me dropping bags of seed or rough handling can crack the outer shell of the seed as well as shaking the germination off. This is in fact why broadcasting soybean seed is not recommended as the paddles in the broadcaster tend to crack the seed shell when the seed drops out of the hopper. Tominator
Re: FRAGILE, HANDLE WITH Yep, I plant mine with a walk behind seeder/plate style. As I walk, you can see that a small % of seed will split and ruin that seed. I'd say that percentage is very small though, like around 1% or less. wtnhunt
Re: FRAGILE, HANDLE WITH Have never heard that before. Would think beans of all types should be handled about the same. While I have never used a broadcast spreader specifically just for soybeans, I did use a broadcast spreader to plant our lablab plus plots last year, and it worked just fine. dogdoc
Re: FRAGILE, HANDLE WITH I've never taken any special care when planting soybeans. Broadcast them with my ATV broadcaster then use the 3-pt disc to cover them. I'm sure I killed a few but always had good thick stands. todd
LETMGROW
Re: FRAGILE, HANDLE WITH He also mentioned it was easy to shake the germination off the seed if it wasn't handled with care. Maybe it wouldn't make a great difference, but a little care in handling might pay off in the long run. We pay good money for seed product, so to get the best of it is in our best intrest.
