Turkeygirl
And I am beginning to feel really frustrated and ready to give up, but I won't let myself give up. I went out this morning and decided to sit in the woods about 50 yards in from the field and gravel pit, on an old logging road.Daylight came, heard nothing. I gave some soft yelps and heard "yelp yelp" from behind me somewhere. I knew it was hen but didn't see her. I waited, did it again and thought it was in front of me. After an hour I decided to get up andsneak closer to the field. As soon as I get up I hear "putt...putt....putt...putt" I crouch down and there behind me about 20 yards away is a turkey still in the roost. I couldn't tell if it was the bearded hen or not so somehow I manage to sit down on the middle of the trail, with the pine tree I was just leaning against, in front of me. She eventually quits her "putts" and sits up there looking around. I look at her through my binocs and eventually to flies off, above me, and lands out in the gravel pit. I give a few soft yelps, and she heads right towards me. She has no beard so I just watch her and she came about 15-20yards from me before she finally went off when I moved. So I got to a few different spots, trying to strike up a gobble but nothing. I head home at 10:30am since I have homework to get done. As I stop just inside the woods to look at the field I was by this morning (I did a loop of some of the land I hunt) but I don't see anything then next thing I know on the other side of the field from where I was this morning, a turkey takes off! I didn't even see it and I don't know how it saw me! I don't know if it was the same hen, a different hen, or the tom, but this is depressing, I'm the biggest turkey spooker in NY state I think, lol. I can't roost birds tonight and I don't know what to do tomorrow morning except probably go to that field and just sit and WAIT! I've seen turkeys in the field almost every day, just not the gobbler, though he was near it that day he gobbled. It's hard to sit and call andn ot hear any gobbles or anything, so I don't know if he is alive or not. I think he is still around unless he got shot when I wasn't out late morning but I haven't seen that guy again and I'm not seeing/hearing anyone else hunting. So any suggestions? I may not be able to hit state land until next week....
Gus
Re: It\'s not even the end of the first week.... Don't give up, keep after them. My season started April 1 and I still have no bird to show for all the hours I have been in the woods, but I have had fun trying to outwit the gobblers, just so far it hasn't worked. vagobbln
Re: It\'s not even the end of the first week.... Heck we've all been there. That's what so neat about turkey hunting. It can all turn around in an instant. You hear nothing all day but you keep cuttin' and runnin' (or whatever your style may be) and all of a sudden - GOBBLE! You plop down, cluck a time or two and there he is. Next thing you know you're "toe-toting" back to the truck. Keep at it.

Turkeygirl
Re: It\'s not even the end of the first week.... Well when you hear of other NYer's having great luck with the turkeys, you begin to wonder why you have to have it so hard... I think I may be taking the morning off... VermontHunter
Re: It\'s not even the end of the first week.... KEEP at it girl,,,, I have yet to nail my Vermont bird, and it's been 3 yrs... This year is the closest I've been yet.... I know just how frustrated you are,, but hey it's about being out the in mother natures world, and observing her beauty at it's best... The Turkey is just a bonus... If you got a hen or 2 around a male has to be around there somewhere, and he isn't always vocal, but there... [ QUOTE ] Well when you hear of other NYer's having great luck with the turkeys, you begin to wonder why you have to have it so hard... I think I may be taking the morning off... [/ QUOTE ] I don't think anyone said they had it easy. Turkey hunting is hard, it is addictive, and it is an art. You loose more battles with the turkey than you win. Keep at it, learn from every hunt and you will get better at it, and eventually get your bird. Giving up won't get you anywhere. Griz
Re: It\'s not even the end of the first week.... Don't give up Ruth... The thing about Turkey hunting is, that you have to have lots of patience... Remember those Turkey's can hear and see far way better then us. Go back out there and set up on them... Cast out some calls...Keep your eyes and ears open... Oh and one more thing. Don't forget your camera... Always keep a positive attitude... Now go gettem girl... Good Luck to ya... Griz... Guest Maine Turkey
Re: It\'s not even the end of the first week.... Definately keep at it. Like vagobbln said...it can turn around in an instant. Try this on for size...I've seen multiple gobblers everymorning for three days (all longbeards) they gobble and strut, but won't come near me. And there aren't even many hens around. So it works both ways. Keep at it...I know I will.
Turkeygirl
Re: It\'s not even the end of the first week.... Thanks guys. I just feel like I'm going to the woods with no real clue where to set-up because I don't have a pattern down on this tom if he is still there. And it is hard when you don't hear gobbles because there just isn't like that psychologically satisfaction of "Oooh, a gobble, he's around",lol. I did end up taking the morning off because I have a final exam I need to study for and some other stuff to do, but I'll be out tonight on top of the gravel pit to see what may come out or go to roost. We never got any rain which might have been helpful to send those turkeys to the fields, but it is a little cooler, so maybe the birds will respond more... MrWiggely
Re: It\'s not even the end of the first week.... They are henned up pretty good right now Ruth. I worked a tom this morning that had 6 hens with him. After they pulled him over the hill, I relocated and worked another tom that had 3 hens. Same thing over and over. Next week will be better. I always say the second week of season is the most productive around yours, and my areas. Wigs
