Re: Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellman's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. The "Titanic" was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after New York City.

The Mexican people were eagerly awaiting delivery and were disconsolate at the loss. So much so that they declared a national day of mourning which they still observe today. It is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo. tongue.gif

Re: Happy Cinco de Mayo!

i almost went and had a few for Cinco de mayo...decided to stay home though...

why is it that irish americans can celebrate St. patrick's day...but cinco de mayo comes around and to everyone its no big deal and some even look down on it? crazy.gif...Being Mexican-american...it kind of makes you feel like your not as important as everyone else when you here or read peoples negative comments about a holiday that even americans should celebrate...yeah i know there is alot going on with the illegal immagrants and stuff and that bothers me just as much as it does you...but you guys have to remember that there are some people here that are mexican american and take offense to some things said like "i think cinco de mayo means run for the border" and a post that just says "yawn"...I am willing to bet that the majority of you that made some sort of smart remark don't even know what Cinco de Mayo is

here is a little info about the holiday..and it also explains why americans should also celebrate this day

Here's my point in the dislike of Mexico and it's illegal aliens that are here right now. I was born here. I have no desire to leave even though my life is not full of luxuries. I have never oppressed a race, religious practice or differing view based on a conflict of my own. I do however feel like people are taking a well intended opportunity and turning it into a demand from a country that doesn't owe them a thing. How can these rights be demanded in our country when they are strictly forbidden in Mexico? The problem is that too sympathetic of Americans and Illegal Alien Mexicans are demanding something that would send this country into a financial spiral from which there is no recovery and no reason. Notice also that I did not say Mexican-Americans. Their is no such thing. Just like their is no such thing as an African-American or Irish-American or any other hyphenated American. You are either an American or a visitor from another country. That's like being married to one woman and having your ex wife stop by for breakfast lunch and dinner and expecting your present wife to cook for her. You can't be both. Either take full pride in being an American or don't take any pride in it at all and go back to the country you are so proud of. See how long they tolerate you saying you are an American anything. If I am in Mexico, I am an American. If I am in Canada, I am an American. If I am in the deepest darkest Jungle of Africa, I am still an American. But in doing so, I don't expect to be treated like I am special or as a citizen of those countries either. I will abide by their laws and do my best to behave as all good Americans should. Until I deny my citizenship in America, along with all of my rights and am declared a citizen of another country, then I will say I am an American. I will also not demand to have things converted into English or for other people to celebrate my holidays based on my country's history. I will celebrate the holidays I choose in the privacy of my own home or in a place where I will not offend the country. No matter where my ancestors came from, I am an American. I don't blame people that are from another country for wanting to come here and benefit from our great system. I just expect that when you do arrive here that you abide by our laws and do not make demands based solely on where you are from. I may sound angy but I am not. I save anger for personal attacks on me, my religion or my family and friends. I just respect the oppinions of others whether they post a yawn or lack of enthusiasm for the illegal immigrants and other country's holidays. It's their oppinion as well as yours Michigan. Make no mistake about it though... I want all illegal immigrants to leave our country. If you don't feel that way then you don't respect our laws. You can't pick and choose which ones you want to obey as long as they are on the books. You can however change the laws in our system. It's everyone's right to try as long as you are an American. If a person is not, then they should shut up and keep their nose out of our business. You have no right's to an oppinion of our laws or it's citizen's rights to want to keep you out if you are an illegal alien. You will not find a more generous country in the world and I truly believe that. But to be given a set of guidelines and try to change it because it keeps a person from taking advantage of our taxpayer's rights is, if nothing else, just plain rude. This may sound really rude, but hear me out Michigan. I don't care if you are a Mexican or an American. My oppinion stays the same. I have on many occasions read your posts and just like anyone else's, I either agree or disagree and it has nothing to do with your ancestry. I would feel the same and do feel the same no matter what country your family comes from. Unless you are here illegally, I appreciate your ideas and thoughts just like I would anyone else on here. I have the same oppinion no matter if I am in a Mexican forum or a KKK forum. No one will change it and I hope that everyone's oppinion has the same standards. I may have offended you but that is not my intention. I don't think anyone here will value my oppinion whether good or bad if I don't back it up no matter where I am. They may not value it anyway but I stand behind it fully and will support yours as well, as long as you fully support it or change your mind. I respect that. Sorry if it seems like I was ranting but ...... tongue.gif

Really honestly dont have a problem with anyone having a celebration. I do however have a problem with the situation we are experiencing in this country with illegal immigrants coming through the borders from Mexico, and have a problem with what these criminals, here illegally, are demanding from this country. That has nothing to do with any mexican-americans here legally.
