Scored with a buddy. Make that, my buddy scored.

I had the day off so I called my buddy who lives in Binghamton, Ny to come down to my place near Scranton PA. He wanted to gun hunt and I wanted to bow hunt. He agreed to bow hunt but only under a condition that he wanted to try. I said ok what is it? John my buddy said, "We hunt from our treestands"

I'll try anything once. Well, we did and we succeeded!

We got out at about 4:50 AM. We both were exhausted by the time we got to where the birds were.

Anyway to make a long story short. He shot a 23 lb 4 oz tom that had a 9 3/4" beard with 1 1/2" spurs!

Great morning it was. So we get back to the car and I say to John, "Where is your camera? I left mine home." His reply, " I thought you brought yours.

We used decoys and we had three toms come right in. Only one offered a shot but talk about awesome. These birds had no clue that we were above them.

If you have never tried it, I would certainly suggest to shoot from above. Think about it, how many preditors are there that attack turkeys from the ground? It's no wonder they had no clue. There eyes were peeled at ground level.

Re: Scored with a buddy. Make that, my buddy scored.

Congratulations guys.

That's strange, because I figured that a turkey would be kind of like a pheasant, always looking for danger from above (hawks, eagles, etc) as well as from the ground. Maybe being a bigger bird, most of the predation comes from below, instead of above like most other upland game birds.. Of course I'm not familiar at all with the habits of turkeys, because we don't have them here.

That's a pretty valuable lesson leaned for sure.

ive done it before, except i was with a gun, i was the caller and my older brother and his friend were in a blind on the ground. and of course. they tell me "wait til we can get a shot if any come in" so after about 10 mins of calling 3 toms and some hens came in and of course, with the shotgun i could have had all 3 in one shot becuause there heads were all together gobbling, but me being nice let them come in more and they wakled right under me... and i mean right under me. the ones fan brushed the tree darn near i was in. it was the coolest thing ever, except i think my ears are now worse than they were becuase of how loud they were gobbling lol. well to make a long story short. i heard my bro take the safety off, and 3 shots later, there were 3 dead toms on the ground and hens going everywhere.

Congrats HDRD to you and your buddy. Bummer about leaving the cameras at home.

Turkeys sure seem to pick you off pretty easy from treestands in the fall around here. That's the only time I encounter turkeys with an aerial view. Don't know if I want to restrict my options to move during the spring or not but I might have to think about doing that with a bow if I can get the right situation next year.
