Re: What do yall think !!

I generally let them pass myself. I think I've shot one in all my years of hunting. Although I wouldn't hold it against anyone if it's legal to take one and they do. When you think about it Jake really don't really contribute much to the population other than themselves making it to the next season. Hens have far more to do with that as well as 2-4 year old toms.

As long as it's legal in your state, it's totally up to the individual. I personally let jakes go and have never shot one. I hunt privately owned and leased property so letting jakes go potentially gives me more opportunities for taking a longbeard the following season.

My first bird three years ago was a jake. It was a great hunt and my first bird, so I figured I'd take him and get that first one out of the way. I typically pass on them now, but if it got late enough in the season, I may take one.

I've never shot one and let'em pass if they come in, but there's nothing wrong with anybody taking one. I even let a two-year old pass this year. This is sorta like the "should you shoot spikes" discussion. It's a personal thing. Hey if that's what you want and it's legal, let'em have it.

Or a mature gobbler (full fan). Youth hunters can kill 1 jake here in Mississippi but all other turkey hunters can only kill mature gobblers. Bearded hens aren't legal either.

How do I feel about it? Well I actually got a call from the person who was the power behind the move to protect jakes making the change in the law 10 or 12 years ago or so now. I was in favor of the rule to protect jakes then and I still am. I like the thought of letting jakes grow into mature birds and I won't shoot them anywhere I hunt, even where they are legal. That's just me though. I'd rather let them get another year on them to mature into gobblers. After all, it only takes 2 years for turkeys to mature. It's not like deer.
