Ever witnessed anything like this?

Talking to one of the local farmers who was out combining. He was waiting for a wagon to get back and I was waiting for him to start combining and moving deer around again so I wandered over and said hi.

He told me a story that hapened to him a week or two before that.It was kinda the same situation, he was sitting waiting for the wagons to get back so he could unload the combine and when he stopped at the end of the round to shut the combine off.A big doe jumped out ahead of the combine, ran over to the lakeshore and started down it at a dead run.She stopped in a patch of really thick stuff and appeared to be struggling to get through it.He quit watching her for a second, and when he looked back she had dissapeared. It was pretty open around there and she had been acting funny so he decided while he waited to walk down and try to see how she dissapeared from sight like that. When he got closer he could hear her thrashing around on the ground and when he walked up she was lying there kicking with blood spurting out her neck and a big pool of blood around her.looking closer he seen what happened.Somehow she had run about an 18 inch piece of stick into her neck while running through the trees, apparently it had cut her juglar vien and she was almost dead when he walked up on her a few minutes later.Pretty crazy and Ive never seen one do anything like that before. shocked.gif

Re: Ever witnessed anything like this?

I have never seen anything like that but I guess accidents do happen.

Sometimes they are taken out by Mother Nature.

I did happen across a dead smell one day while hunting and discovered a hollow tree that had fallen during a recent storm.

There were two dead raccoons squashed when it fell that had been denned up in there.

That was the first and only time I have seen any of the natural critters that got killed by an unnatural natural occurrence. .....popgun

Never seen anything like that before. Two years ago after a bad storm with about 70 mph straight line winds blew a tree over on our place that fell on a doe and killed her.

[/ QUOTE ] Wow, you must have some fat deer there. Here, they jump out of the way of arrows from time to time. I'll be over there with a trailer to pick up some of your fat lazy deer to bring here.

Re: Ever witnessed anything like this?

Kinda freaky, but I have one just like it. In 1993 ol' Milton Johnson (buddies grandpa) was in the grouse woods. My friend and I were driving back to camp with Milton and had a doe and a fawn in front of us on the road. We slowed down and saw the deer run into the woods, only to have the fawn appear back on the road. We continued and the fawn jumped into the woods, hit a tree and fell over "bawling" it was a horrible sound! We got out and ol' Milton grabbed his knife and put the fawn out of her misery. We called the Game Warden, as we had a dead young deer with spots and no season was yet upon us. He took it and we got the report that the fawn had indeed broke it's neck (running into the tree) The deer was mounted whole and the backstraps were delicious! I have told others the story and have heard of 2 other parties that have also witnessed a deer hitting a tree and falling over suffering......Mother Nature is cruel, I am just glad I got the backstraps :-) It does happen!
