need2hunt Posted May 9, 2006 Report Share Posted May 9, 2006 I was doing a littl cutting and running the other day and got this bird fired up. I closed the distance and ended up standing behind a tree (which seemed like a good idea at the time). Well the bird got to where I could see him and I got him going again. He started coming in on a string following the lay of the land which would bring him right to where I wanted him. He's coming and coming and I picked the spot that I wanted to shoot him (about 15 yards), well he speeded up on me a little and passed the spot I wanted to shoot and passed behind a briar bush. That didn't seem to be a big deal becasue I figured he couldn't see me behind the tree so I started to reposition my gun to the left side of the tree. That's when I realized that I was in a bit of trouble, I was too close to the tree to get the gun around to how I wanted it, I thought about taking a small step back but didn't want to spook him - it was an awkward stance but I thought it would work and picked the spot I would take the shot. Well I'm waiting and waiting for the bird to pop out into my shootin lane, finally I slowly lean my head around the tree to take a peep. I guess I just call too good he cleared the briar and instead of continueing along to where I wanted him, he turned and headed straight at my tree. I took the first available shot which was 4 yards or less, and missed him cleanly I'm suprised the gases coming out of the barrel didn't kill him He freaked out (understandibly) and flew out of there. LOL I didn't kill him but boy that was fun!!! I figured at that range my pattern was about the size of a golf ball Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

An old hunting buddy of mine told me once when I missed a deer " There sure is a lot of air around those things" meaning they can be hard to hit or easy to miss.
