Short Mag vs Regular

Re: Short Mag vs Regular

The only advantage to the short mags are short actions for lighter weight guns and no belts to make the cases last longer. Other than that, there are no benefits to the short mag over the standard length magnum cartridges.

When using the longer, heavier bullets, the short mags loose out as the bullet must be seated deeper to fit in the short action magazines. This space comes from the powders area and they are slower. Some think the case magically produces more velocity because its more efficient, but not really. When pressure levels are equal, the long case will win due to higher colume.

As for the Super Short mags, I have read a lot of bad news about them. Mainly it is about the brass being too hard. Due to the short length of the case and the high pressures, the hardened brass does not expand reliably enough to fill the chamber.

Gunsmiths are shying away from the short in the Encore as its is giving too much bolt face thrust. This is not good for the action. The big custom barrel makers do not chamber it any more for the Encore.
