wtnhunt
Got a really screwed up situation with the schools going on here. Just curious. Would you put your child(little girl), just starting school, who turns 5 in July, on a county school bus with elementary level and junior high school kids for what would be a 45-60 minute ride each way to and from the schools? Jeramie
Re: Would you? I doubt it. That would be putting those little ones in a bad situation where they couldnt defend for themselves. I know not all drivers are useless but many at our school were and remain worthless.

Tominator
Re: Would you? Your oldest would not be riding with her? In answer to your question, yes, I probably would. (and have) I don't like the busing situation here either William, but unless you're willing to cart her yourself, what other options do you have? c_lou
Re: Would you? I would have to say no. Don't think little ones need to hear what high school & jr. high kids are talking about on the bus.

(and have) I don't like the busing situation here either William, but unless you're willing to cart her yourself, what other options do you have? [/ QUOTE ] Yes Chris, Christina would be riding with her, but that still would not ease my mind. Hear way too many stories about buses and what takes place, and I rode a bus in high school myself up until I was able to drive myself. Situation is the closest school is about 7 miles from us,we have an address for that city, phone for that city, and utilities are out of that city. We are about maybe 400 yards out of that district. The house sits in two districts. The district we are in is for the county, that school is about 20 miles away, but about a 30 minute drive. The school systems had been taking out of district students up until another school system in another district stirred up a bunch of crap that ended up going to the US justice dept because they were losing money, and that system also has racial issues which somehow figures into this even though both schools my kids could go to will have no effect on the school that initiated the complaint. Yes I will be driving them. Kind of wonder if it would do any good to contact our elected officials about this.
buckee
Re: Would you? It's even easier to be under-protective. I wouldn't do it either, but that's easy to say, not knowing how far the school is from your home and what other options are available. I drove or walked my daughter right up to graduation from high-school

AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Would you? I'd say no just because of the language and the antics going on around her while riding that bus. Now if she could sit behind the driver, not an issue, I'd say yes but today's teenager seems to lose their manners that their parents try to put into them because of peer pressure and trying to "look cool" in front of their friends. You get kids in groups and they tend to act totally out of character. Face it parents, we think we have good kids and most do, we do all we can do to enhance their lives, who knows how they act when they get around their friends and they try to fit in by acting or doing things they know their parents would object too! There's always that bad apple that takes a good kid and warp's their mind slightly. What amazes me anymore is the language and clothes this kids wear. I wish my little girls could be the way they are forever but my only hope is their mom and I do our best to teach them right from wrong regardless if we're with them or they are alone and with thier peers! wtnhunt
Re: Would you? [ QUOTE ] Is Christina riding now? Any problems? [/ QUOTE ] No Chris. She has never riden the school bus to school, with the exception of the time while she was in daycare, which she then rode in the daycare/church 15 passenger van all of a half a mile to the school. I have always driven her to school since she started. The bus for the school she currently goes to does not pick up out here anyways, it used to turn around at the end of our drivewaywhen my sisters were in school about 10 years ago, but now stops about a mile and a half(driving distance) up the road from us. Somehow the district lines have moved . On that bus all grades pk-12th are riding the same bus . Thing is with gas prices, the difference in the drive for us is going to add up really quick . Tominator
Re: Would you? Have there been any issues with other parents and smaller children? Maybe you should go to a board meeting and voice your concerns. Call a board member and see what he/she thinks. Around here the buses make 2 trips. First one in the morning for the jr. and sr. high, then later for the elementary. We have differing start times. Jr. and Sr. high school starts at 7:45, elementaries start at 9. I don't know what your student population is like, but around here, our older kids actually look after the little ones.
wtnhunt
Re: Would you? I have talked to both superintendants of both the school systems numerous times and they say their hands are tied, part of why I am questioning if it might do any good to go to a higher power. They had several meetings, several parents voiced their concerns. The schools answer to the parents was move into the district! Actually surprisingly Christina is kind of happy, her current school is implementing a dress code(another post all together), and the new to my kids school does not and will not have a dress code and is supposed to be a better school, although teacher/student ratios are higher . birddog
Re: Would you? I would be o.k. with it: I would also ask for the younger students to sit in the very front, and I would talk with my 5 year old about what is appropriate/inappropriate behavior. Or.....just drive them yourself. It is a free country. Or hire someone to drive her. If you choose to use the free bussing, then I guess you just have to go with what is offered. IMHO

stevebeilgard
Re: Would you? "country school" bus adds a lot. i'd personally check it out, talk with the driver, then probably let her ride. kids love busses, makes them feel grown up. as long as it's safe. so, check out safe.
