woodsman1977
I am really interested in making a trip out to Western South Dakota for a Merriams hunt. Has anybody hunted here and if so, Does it hold a good population of turkeys and how was the weather when you were there? I hear it can be pretty rough. Thanks

Dakota
Re: Hunting in the Black Hills National Park It's a good bet you'll get a chance at an old "Hills" gobbler. There is an unlimited amount of tags, so you're guaranteed one. Dakota
okbowman
Re: Hunting in the Black Hills National Park There are a lot of birds there as well as North East Wyoming
borch
Re: Hunting in the Black Hills National Park Actually it's the Black Hills National Forest. There are unlimited tags available. But you do need to send in an application to get one. The population is pretty good right now. Weather varies greatly, especially earlier in the season. When we left there this spring they got 5 ft of snow 60 miles north of where we were staying. They only got 6" where we were at. Other years we ust missed major snow storms by a few days. One year we were hunting in 1 1/2 ft of snow in 90+ degree weather. That was weird. It's a great hunt and accomadations are pretty reasonable that time of year. It's hard to find a place make prettier to hunt in.

waterfowler_gal
Re: Hunting in the Black Hills National Park Borch hit the nail on the head. He has helped me in the past. I love hunting Merriam's there. It is an annual trip for myself. The culture, history and scenery will take your breath away! The wildlife is unbelieveable. The terrain and altitudes can be tough if you are not use to them. There is plenty of public land to hunt. I was out there in April and harvested a beautiful bird. The weather is like night and day. It can be really cold and really hot. It is a really wonderful place to hunt and would suggest it to be a good place if you want a challenge and a trip you won't ever forget. Good luck!
