[/ QUOTE ] Are you sure it's not the fact that you aren't using a leader? Chain pickerel have very sharp teeth. If you've hooked him, you should be able to land him if you use a leader that's at least 20# test line. Is he breaking the line? Or spitting the hook? If he's spitting the hook, are you sure it's chain pickerel and not gar???? Gar have very small throats. They will take a shiner and run with it, then stop and try to swallow it. It takes them a while. ( I love to catch them too ) Jacks ( pickerels) are my favorite to catch.

Make sure it's legal, but that's what I'd do too. They used to drive us crazy down in Florida.
whttlbucksteve
Re: Pesky Pickrel!! You can catch them with a small inline spinner or a small piece of cut bait. Let them eat it for awhile and then set the hook hard because there mouths are hard bone.I fish for gar all the time in the summer I even have the IL. state record for long nose gar. Let them take the bait and run with it for a long time. When they stop they are trying to swallow. Give them a few moments then set the hook. But good luck trying to get rid of them. They are EVERYWHERE!!!

DSGB
Re: Pesky Pickrel!! You can also catch them on a piece of nylon rope. Just cut a 6-8" section and clamp a D-ring in the middle. Use a comb or steel brush to fray the rope. The gars teeth will get entangled in the fibers. Here's a link with more info and techniiques: http://www.savethegar.org/fishing.php
