New Encore Barrell but which one ?

I am looking at adding a new kid to the family smile.gif

I want to add another Encore barrel to the group, I have the 50 cal ML and a 7MM right now. I want something for deer and maybe Elk.

I was thinking .270 or 30.06. I have a 30.06 in another rifle already but would consider it again just for the ease of switching. But then thought of .270 since I dont have one and they shoot well.

What do you guys think ?

Re: New Encore Barrell but which one ?

i have a 308 for my encore and i love that caliber. best caliber they ever made in my opinion. the one i have i can shoot any kind of load from a factory load to a reload and thery all shoot well. you will also find that the 308 is a nice shooter and doesn't put the smack into you like a 7mm or a 300 mag. it will also take down some big critters. if your into reloading i will get my stuff out and shoot you some data on what loads i am shooting with my ballistic tips and my accubonds. to tell the truth i shoot the same reloads for the bt's and accubonds and they both shoot inside a quarter at a 100 yards. i think i will end up shooting only the accubonds from the 150 to the 200 grainers depending on what i want to shoot. whether it be deer or elk or even grizzly bear. a good 200 grain bullet in the right place i would feel very comfortable with

good luck to you

Why not expand your thinking? You have a 7mm (I am guessing Rem Mag) and a .50 cal ML, so why get a .270 Win or a .30-06 when the performance is very similar to what you have now? The 7mm Rem Mag is more than adequate for deer and elk and so it the .50 cal ML. If it were me, I would go bigger with the .338 Win Mag for large long range critters, or smaller for deer with a .243 Win or .25-06 Rem, since you have the 7mm Rem Mag.

I agree with AJ. the 270/280/30-06/7mmRemMag are all very similar in the ground they cover. While it was not one of your choices mentioned........I'd go with the 25-06. Still a nice deer round, but with lighter bullets it is a nice varminter as well.

Get a .308. That's what I have on my TC and it shoots like a dream. Does a job on deer and very very acurate! I've also shot a bear with it that only ran about 15 yards and a deer that droped from a little over 200 yards out. Shot it the other day and but the bullett in the same hole back to back.

Re: New Encore Barrell but which one ?

This had been my same delema recently since I bought a 209x50 and a 7mm08 for deer hunting.

I went with a 300 Win Mag but was looking hard at a 338 as well.

Price on the 300 WM beat out the 338...

All these are in the Encore 15" barrel handgun version BTW...

I agree with AJ by going bigger.

Ya never know when an out of state big game hunt may fall into your lap.

Good to be ready IMHO. LOL

.338 alittle big for a handgun???

Not at all. I have a custom barreled XP100R chambered for a .338/284 wildcat. It shoots great and I would not hesitate to use it on anything on this continent.
