Male of Female?

Re: Male of Female?

The USGS site is awesome. That's a good page explaining the differences for the Ruffed Grouse.

Another way, which can be difficult in the fall which is the normal hunting season is to turn the bird over and gently blow on the breast. If the skin is exposed or there's new feathers there, chances are it's a female and that's her "brood patch" where she used to sit on eggs. If you don't see that, you can look down in the "nether region" If you see a little bump, that's called a cloacal sac, and that's a male, but they lose that after the breeding season too.
