TreeWalker
OK.....I'm 'bout ready to work my ground, and buy the seed I need........I've located some Sorghum and some Arvika Peas.........what kinda of coverage should I look for ?? If in 50lb bags, how many will it take approximately per acre ?? I'm just looking at broadcasting it, so let me know basically how much I need of each per acre.........thanks, Clay
dogdoc
Re: Ignorant Seeding Question 50# of peas per acre and 10# of sorghum per acre when mixed. You don't want to go too heavy with the sorghum--you want to give y our peas the best chance with less competition and the sorghum is mainly there to provide something for the peas to climb on. The deer in my area do not feed on the sorghum at all until the fall when they will nibble on the seed heads. What fertilizer are you using? todd
wtnhunt
Re: Ignorant Seeding Question Would also follow Todd suggestion Clay. The deer here really dont start really hitting the sorghum until around October.
TreeWalker
Re: Ignorant Seeding Question Wow Todd, something else I didn't put much thought into.........fertiolizer.....what do you suggest ?? Clay
wtnhunt
Re: Ignorant Seeding Question I would probably use something not so high in nitrogen. Sure Todd will correct me if I am wrong, but think beans and peas dont need too much nitrogen, and more nitrogen can promote faster weed growth. I would think a triple 13 or a 6-12-12 should work well.
dogdoc
Re: Ignorant Seeding Question I usually use 10-20-10 or triple 13 just b/c it's the most common fertilizer around here. the 6-12-12 that William suggested would also work. I'd broadcast about 200# per acre at time of planting. good luck todd
