Re: In two generations we will all be speaking spanish

I remember a fellow member on here...I think he is a teacher but anyway, I remember him saying a long time ago something like and it's not word for word so bear with me but it's close "I can't believe more Americans don't know spanish or I can't believe more people won't take the time to learn spanish".

That's really ate me and still does to this day. My response to that and still is today is that I can't believe we are trying to still adapt to their language. I can't believe that we are still being pushed to learn another language other than english just and so we can communicate with the ones that can't. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Re: In two generations we will all be speaking spanish

Learning another language shouldn't be looked at as a negative, in fact, knowing another language can have its benefits. Should we force people to learn another language, of course not, well, in high schools its part of the curriculum, but there is a choice on which one to learn. Students in other countries learn English, why shouldn't our students learn another language?

Besides, I've read the college papers of English students and I am surprised that half the kids at the college I work at can even communicate, of course, most kids knowledge of writing can be summed up like this. TTYL, LMBO, etc. etc.

Slugshooter.... you've hit the nail right on the head. It's down right disgraceful the number of people in this country, born & bred, full-blood Americans, that can't read, write, or even balance their check book!

But they are the ones that point their fingers the most! In my buisness, it is also a tragedy to see those that can't manage their financial affairs, must less their own children!

We see it and hear it every day.... bad language... bad grammar..... and extremely bad communication skills! Quit using ...."YOU KNOW".... "LIKE".... and... "BASICALLY".... after every other word in a sentence. If we took those three words and phrases out of our language.... 2/3 of this country couldn't talk to one another!

We need to clean up our OWN HOUSE first....!

The ONLY reason I would like to know how to speak Spanish is so I can understand what those Mexican guys are saying/mumbling ( they ALWAYS stare at you and mumble under their breath when you are at Wal-Mart or grocery shopping or WHEREVER!!!!!!!!!!)

Other than that.....................I feel if you are in AMERICA....speak ENGLISH. Period.

I'm with the gunny on this it seems that everywhere i go there are mexicans speaking spanish and my cousin worked at wal-mart and he was telling me that the mexican children would ask him a question in english and then relay it back to his parents in spanish! He said it would take about 15 to 20 minutes to get thier question answered when all they have to do is learn to speak and or read english there wouldn't be a problem!

Bottom line if you are in the USA speak ENGLISH!!!

LMAO--you have a selective memory.

What I said was, you shouldn't be afraid of education. What's wrong with knowing a few languages? Just about all the industrialized nations learn more than one language from a very early age. We have exchange students in our building every year, and they all were taught at least 2 languages, and most of them know around 3 or 4. Makes me feel ashamed really.

Now I know, you're going to get up on a soap box and spout "we're the victors of the world, they must learn English, yadda yadda yadda." I agree with that to the extent that I believe all the illegals and naturalized in America should learn English if they're here. My original premise was "what's wrong with education?" not "we should all learn Spanish because there's tons of immigrants from Mexico...."

I'm fully aware that America is a melting pot, and tons of people had to learn English to get around here in America. My grandparents had to learn English when they came over from Poland, and it was considered a sin if their kids spoke in Polish. They were "strongly persuaded" shall we say, to drop the native tongue and pick up English. Personally, I think that's a shame. Here I sit being able to say silly sayings like "ZHIMA, ZHIMA, GOTCHEE NEE MA." and other words here and there, and that's it for Polish. I've lost quite a bit of culture there I think.

Where did your family immigrate from Mike? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to teach your children the ways of the home country?

Knowledge is power my friends, that's all I was saying.

Now, if y'all will excuse me, I have chicken to BBQ. grin.gif

TreeStandBH, I agree with you. All of my employees are required to take an English speaking class if they come to work for me. The same situation happened to me where a spanish speaking man I had hired years back said, "you need to learn how to speak spanish", and in response I said, "No Jose, you're in America, you and your people need to learn to speak English!" He's still with me and one of my best employees. And speaks perfect English now! smile.gif

english is the international language. voted on by all the world. did you know that every international airport in the world has an english speaking air traffic controller? true.

but, this is america, where english is the only language. i'm not against learning a foreign language, and did so. i just don't want to HAVE to learn a foreign language. any foreign language.

Re: In two generations we will all be speaking spa

You know the old saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks?" Well, it's true to an extent, it just takes a little longer, much the same as learning a different language when you are middle aged. It's easier for the kids to learn it much the same way it's easier for a kid to learn how to use a computer easier than someone who is 50 years old and never had to use one. I'm not saying that they can't learn English and if they want to live here and become a citizen then they should definitely learn English, but many people are either too proud or to stubborn. Too proud to fail if they don't grasp the language or too stubborn because they don't feel they need to.

If they don't want to learn it for what ever reason, then they should stay home. BTW I had family on both sides that were here before the American revolution (including native Americans). I don't speek any Cherokee though. smirk.gif

Re: In two generations we will all be speaking spa

Had to take 2 years foreign language in high school to graduate. Being I was in Florida at the time, made sense to learn spanish. I now remember very little of that high school spanish I learned some 20 years ago.

Knowledge can be power and nothing wrong with broadening your horizons. I do however think this country is making too many exceptions for those not willing to learn the language spoken in this country. No DL exams should be offered in spanish or any other language for that matter. Citizens should have to learn english period.
