Some people

I wasn't sure where this should go so I put it here in the lounge.

I was hunting a relatively new place this year (out of state) and when the clay roads were dry enough to take the vehicle on I went around and met and visited with some of the neighbors. All that I met were extremely nice and a couple of them gave me permission to hunt there properties to. But of all of the visits there was one that made me feel horrible, not for anything I did, just the stupidity and disrespect of some others.

I was talking with a farmer and had a nice half hour visit. In that time I found out he had approx 1,000+ acres but he leased it out or else he'ld give me permission. Then he told me "It's real hunters like you that try to do everything right and promote what you do that aren't to blame about things. Unfortunately it's the 1 or 2 dirt bags in these small local towns that give all of you a bad name."

I think jst about every hunter has heard the excuse of "I'ld let you hunt but I had some hunter shoot one of my cows and now I won't let anyone on my land" Well this farmers stor was a little different and unfortunately very true. Over the years he pretty much let anyone on that asked and realized there were probably a few that didn't ask that would show up anyway. Well it finally got to the point where the "buddy system" broke the bank. It ot to where he couldn't even go to his own property during deer season because it was overran with people, he found out that he had almost 30 hunters with rifles hunting one of his tracts and that itt was getting to the point of somebody might get hurt. So he decided to do what many farmers have done, he leased it out to some reputable out of state hunters so he could get control of things again.

And that's when he started having his cows shot. No not from the hunters that were leasin the land, from some of the people that he so graciously allowed to hunt for years without ever asking anything of them. Evidently some of them thought it was there right to hunt his land instead of a priviledge and that the farmer owed them something back for leasing the land out. I think he said the first year they shot 5 of his cows the first week of season. Since then they shoot about 2 each year. this just made me feel sick that someone would actually do this. And to further the prediciment one of the guys that's been doing it ran his mouth off about it and it got back to the farmer. But he's in a lose lose situation, he either does nothing about it and loses a couple cows a year (I'm guessing it equals out to $1,500+ for the 2) or he does something about it and when the yahoo gets out of jail or after getting a slap on the wrist he ends up with more dead cows on his hands, not good either way.

Anyway I just had to vent about it, like I said it really torched me off that some idiot would do something like that. The only positive thing about it was the farmer was still all for hunters, he's just alot more careful on who he considers calling one.

Re: Some people

one time i was hunting in a buddy stand with my dad (now this stand weighs over 100 pounds so it's pretty much a perminit stand). we've had that stand there for oover 1yr 1/2. anyways, we just get all setteled in the stand about 5:30ish. it's still kinda dark. I'm looking around and see this light. I realizie it's another hunter and i tell dad. so he pulls out his flashlight and starts flashing the other hunter rite in the face w/ the flashlite. the guy just keeps on walkin towards us. So we finnaly relize he has one of those climber stands rite in front of us. so my dad is still flashing him and he proceeds to go to his stand and climb up. he stayed there for the whole day. i was soooo ticked. mad.gif some people just don't get it.

Re: Some people

The lack of respect is something that has really gotten out of control in this country. People just dont respect what belongs to others like they used to.

Killing livestock should get him more than a slap on the wrist. Retribution made to the farmer for his losses pretty well would seem like the very least that would come out of it.

If I were the farmer and I knew who it was, I would most definitely report it.
