crazy doe stalked me

A buddy of mine has been seeing a nice buck coming ot of this corn field the last two nights right before dark while hes duck hunting.I decided to give it a try tonight and see what happens.I get out there and theres deer already running around.I sneak in to the corn and cant get to the far end because of the deer so I make the best of it and duck into the nearest corner.Ive got a clear shot out the end of the rows and there a bunch of stalks knocked down, giving me a little cover.I could shoot across the rows to except for about 3 stalks right on the outside edge, they were broken anyway so I went over and pushed em down with my foot out of the way.I couldnt see much from where I was sitting and knew anything that showed up would be in range before I seen it, so I sat and held my bow up so it would be ready to go.About 30 minutes go by and I glance over at the shooting lane I made, theres a 6 pointer standing there, already in the lane and no clue I was there.I let him walk and he gets out in font of me.I start watching him feed and kinda get sloppy and aint watching the other ywo directions.Pretty soon I glance over and about jump out of my coveralls, theres a doe standing there, 4 rows over from me sniffing the cornstalks I stepped on to make a hole to shoot through frown.gifI hadnt heard her come in and it just suprised the heck out of me to see her standing that close facing me.She sniffs the stalks awhile and you can almost see it dawn on her to look up, she raises her head and there I am.I have my corn camo on but the winds almost blowing straight at her, I stay motionless and after a few minutes she heads on around the corner.Im pretty relieved at this point, untill I look the other way to check for deer and see her standing there looking at me.Now she is directly downwind of me and only about 15 yrds away.We have a stare down for what seems like a long time and she finally puts her head down and starts feeding on down the field.Im pretty happy at this point, 2 deer in bow range and niether ones busted me and spooked. Then I hear footsteps coming back towards me.I clip my release on the string, raise the bow, and there it is, the same doe.I am not exxagerating, for the next hour she did this, walk about 30 yrds down the field, turn and come back, stare at me, walk past about 30 yrds the other way, turn and repeat it.Once in awhile she would circle around and look in the other shooting lane or stand in front of me with her nose in the air sniffing. She does this like 2 dozen times in that hour and its about dark, I havent been able to lower my bow or even take the release off, my arms are throbbing and I can no longer feel my legs Ive been kneeling on.Shes not even feeding, just stalking me grin.gifFinally Ive had enough, I wat till I hear her coming, draw my bow back, when she stops broadside about 15 yrds out I put the pin behind her shoulder and let down, I never wanted to shoot a deer so bad in my life but Im outta doe tags and theres still some big bucks chasing does. One more time and its way past dark when she gets back to me, I stand up, walk out the side of the corn and down the field, look back and shes just staring at me confused.gifconfused.gifCrazy deer anyway, at first I thought she made a nice decoy but it became pretty obvious she was just being annoying grin.gif

Re: crazy doe stalked me

Iowa bowhuntinfool....NEVER SHOOT A DEER AND LEAVE IT LAY!!!!!!!!!!!! That is called wanton waste and is VERY ILLEGAL in every state to my knowledge......Not to mention a total disrespect for the game you pursue.....And no she didn't need to be shot....She simply was curious and didn't know what he was.....That's one of the great experiences of hunting to observe animals like that.....

I hardly ever get off on a soap box like this, but I really find that statement made by you to be very offensive and would suggest you delete it before others get wind of it.....Just my opinion but Im sure Im not the only one that it will rub the wrong way....

Horst, great story you gotta love when things like that happen...I can just imagine your arms...I've had deer look at me so long at full draw that I had to let down on them!!!!!

What kind of crap is this coming from another hunter. Since when is it legal to shoot deer and let them lay. We are hunters, not shooters looking for some live target practice in the field just to get our jollys.

It's been a while since I seen crap like this posted in this forum.

This forum is about helping each other become more responsible hunters not this crap.

The minute you shoot an animal and it drops, you have harvested that animal, whether you touch it or not...who are you trying to kid and what kind of example are you trying to set for others in here. You should be ashamed at posting such garbage as this.

Man...I've heard it all now.

Re: crazy doe stalked me

Actually guys, I think I know what hes talking about but it has nothing to do with hunting. If you have to many deer on your property, and they are doing damage to it you can shoot em but you cant move em after that or its illegal.Ive heard this before as well but have no idea if its got any truth to it.

So if your hunting, its illegal, and it is wanton waste. if your preventing property damage and thier on your property its legal.Be a good one for myth busters because its a pretty common thing to hear. confused.gif

Re: crazy doe stalked me

You asked for it! What kind of idiocy is this? frown.gif

Why would you or any other ethical hunter (maybe that's the problem) suggest or condone such behavior out of anyone. We (hunters) have enough problems with incidents like that in WI, and slobs among our ranks, that we don't need anyone suggesting such crap here. Just what we need, one of our own spewing such crap to give anti's and the uninformed or misinformed fuel for their fires. Making such a suggetion is both ignorant and irresponsible! Do you not have more respect for yourself or the animals you hunt than that??? mad.gifWhat would someone who visited here think of condoning such conduct. frown.gifconfused.gif

Actually in Oklahoma it is legal, but not for hunting purposes. Farmers are given the right to shoot every deer they see on their property if they want to, but the can't lay hands on them. I know several peanut farmers who pay people to come in and spotlight the deer and shoot them off their fields. I disagree with this totally of course, but to each thier own I suppose.

Re: crazy doe stalked me

I would never shoot a deer unless for the purpose of putting meat in the freezer. However, some of you need to understand that a deer is nothing more than a varmit to farmers. They cause millions of dollars in crop damage yearly and if legal the farmer has the right to do as he pleases. I'm sure none of you have ever shot a ground hog and just left him lay or threw him back in his hole. smirk.gif

Although most of us don't like the idea of these things happening...the Game Comm./DNR/whoever usally don't do enough to help these farmers out. We are talking about their livelyhood and these deer are taking it away from a farmer. Sad, but I see nothing wrong with a farmer doing this. There was a big stink about a farmer here in PA shooting elk that was destroying his crops. As far as I know, nothing was done to him for doing this, and can't say that I blame him. smirk.gif

Re: crazy doe stalked me

Again we have a classic post, where some read way too much into a post.

Why is it that some people think Iowabowhuntinfool, does this type of hunting and approves of this method ?

The one mistake I see here is that Iowabowhuntinfool posted it and not, pm'd Horst about it as posts like these can get way too much attention.

Re: crazy doe stalked me

Thanks RTF and let me very clear on this I CERTAINLY DO NOT condone this while hunting I did not mean for horst too shoot and leave it lay but In Iowa as weel as many other states it is very much legal too shoot a deer and leave it lay as a management tool... very disgusting too get too this point but I personally know 3 farms right here in central Iowa that have had too do this they even tried having the DNR come out and moinitor the situation on one farm in particular it was 67 antlerless deer in his hay field .... and 1 horned deer how would hou manage this....No i really wanna know how would you manage this .... it is definately our responsibility as hunters too manage deer herds too the best of our ability for sure and this is by a clean ethical harvest. In Iowa we have a huge over population of deer and it is very very devistating too the farm crops and the farmers lively hood the hay field I mentioned was 19 acres and the farmer lost 2/3 of the hay and other farmers loose thousands of dollars in crops the only reason for shooting a deer and leaving them is managment so if I did not make my self clear then you can PM and Ill try and explain it better .... Thanks horst and RTF for you guys at least seing my side of it before jumping too conclusions like many others on this board

On a side note I come too these boards casue I respect each and every one of your opinions but in the future could we possibly refrain from the name calling until you know the whole story it just shows support for a fellow hunters ...

Thanks and have a great day....

Re: crazy doe stalked me

I think horst has a mistress out there....love sick doe..LOL.

Has for the kill and leave it lay situation, the only part that disgust me about it is that there are plenty of prople that could really use this meat. Why wouldn't the DNR of the area donate this meat to the needy or have a game supper to raise funds for game management ??? really seems to be a waste....

Re: crazy doe stalked me

hey Im with you but you cant touch em if you do that ... they wouldnt even give us tags too put on em jsut told us too shoot em ... go figure... In Iowa city the police practice there swat skills on the deer there with hi poered riffles too try and drop deer in the city limits with one shot one kill kinda thing ... I dont get it frustrates me too ... I would gladly take em too a locker ... In Iowa we have a feed the homeless programs for deer and for aour prisons they eat deer meat if we donate teh deer too the locker all it cost us i a 11 dollar tag...

Re: crazy doe stalked me

I understand the person shooting the deer not touching them, but it seems to me the DNR in these states are being totally neglagent in not harvesting this meat. They themselves would have the authority to harvest this animal for some type of human consumption. I may be overstepping my bounds but I would say that states that allow this type of activity to happen without any regard to havesting this meat has a totally messed up management policy.

Re: crazy doe stalked me

Iowabowhuntinfool,

WV has issued permits in the past so farmers could clear out deer when the population was high, rain was short, and the grass in meadows was even shorter and the deer had reachable foliage eaten. Several got shot and never eaten. It was a management tool. Not a nice scenario, but needed.

Re: crazy doe stalked me

and hey I dont like it either but it is a reality that the population is way outa wack in Iowa its our responsibilty as hunters too fix this we watched 2 drives last year froma hill top and seen about 40 does run out this timber not one shot was fired.... now tell me the group working that drive it doing there par too manage the population ... it happens every where but it shouldnt is my only point other wise you get too where we are now farmers shooting deer and leaving them .... like it or not that is how it is atm

Re: crazy doe stalked me

Beleive I understand the DNR can't be out to every mass killing and understand that it needs to be done, but it just seems a waste to let good meat rot. I don't mean to beat this issue to death but I just can't get that image out of my head and realize it must be even harder for ethical hunters in your area to stomach. I hope a better solution arises out there for ya....

Re: crazy doe stalked me

Iowabowhuntinfool. I know four farmers that do this in southern Iowa, I agree that it should be donated, but I also agree the farmers in the state of Iowa, should be allowed a relief from this burden.

I was hunting Missouri right across the state line, In my eight days hunting, I seen over 230 deer, this was on several different farms and some may have been doubles, of those 230+ I seen only 17 bucks, I killed 5 does ( Missouri has no limit on does) and the two other hunters with me also killed a couple does. We took 11 total, I plan on buying 10 more doe tags, as all meat is being donated to locals that don't hunt. But the herd is out of control, some drastic measure needs to be applied.

I don't really agree with leaving them lay, but I can't blame the farmers for not wanting to work for free.

I agree with you its the lesser of 2 evils I think its disgusting that we have too shoot em and leave em but it s also disgusting that we cant get the population under control because of politics or whatever.... dont get me wrong we need management this is a waste for the meat but it has too be controled some how ....

Re: crazy doe stalked me

in regards to iowabowhuntingfool's comment i have heard that that type of activity is legal for farming pourposes but i still don't think that it is right i think they should take them and give the meat to homeless shelters or something along those lines so it just doesn't sit there and rot
