hangunnr
I'm contemplating the purchase of a custom 300 win mag barrel and would like to hear opinion as to the best choice for barrel length. The barrel will be for my Encore so having a little extra length won't be an issue. I see some of the factory bolt guns are using 26" tubes. Would it be over kill to go with 28 inches? Would there be any velocity advantage to this or even longer tubes? I know there has to be a point where you don't get any benefit from a longer barrel. I just don't know what it is. hangunnr
AJ
Re: 300 Win mag barrel length I have a 28" barrel on my custom .300 Wby Mag. It gives me 300 RUM ballistics. In the .300 Winnie Mag you should see 100-125 fps gain by going from 26" to 28" depending on the load. The extra mass out front helps in steadying the gun for shooting also. I would not go over 28" as it gets too heavy and while the velocity can get faster, the accuracy can go out the door as the barrel can start to whip with harmonics. I went with a #5 taper fluted on my gun. It will shoot 1/2" 5 shot groups on demand. I would go with at least a 26" barrel.
