Re: Custom Airel-Topo Maps-Cheap

MyTopo is currently updating there database. Some states are already completed and they are hard at work on the others.

Re: Custom Airel-Topo Maps-Cheap

I have noticed nearly all the TOPO maps are quite dated... Ours in N. Texas is from 1984!

But, the color airel maps are much newer. Most of the ones I have created, ordered and sold were around 2004.

Updating TOPO maps is a big deal, I think it has to be done by the FED government, USGS.....

I did some heavy research on these maps by MYTOPO .COM. While I am far form an expert on map making... The benefits of making your own custom hunting maps can be huge. Thier cost is inexpensive, and they are also very easy to order, create and recieve thorugh the mail.

Did you know you can also order and buy them on this website?

Generally speaking topo maps don't need to change for thier purpose is to map topography and not to map buildings. Yes, roads do change depending on the area but topography is what the map was origonally designed to show. Other features were placed on the map to help you figure out where you are.

I have a topo map of 1912 and it's just as accurate as the new ones in metric.

If you buy a program such as Map Techs Terrain Navigator you can have both. Photos on 3D maps.

But, that is not for free like Mytopo. Nice post!

I agree it's a good service for people who dont have a GPS or a program to process the information their GPS does give them.

I use a simple Garmin E-Trex GPS. Before it was nothing more than a tool to get to my treestand and back to the truck.

Using Terrain Navigator, I can add waypoints(treestand sites, points of interest, etc..), measure the distance between points, print out maps and laminate them myself.

I can also add a waypoint into a map and then go directly to it to check it out or go to a waypoint where I roosted turkeys the night before...then chase them all over the next morning, because they flew down to the south then went along the creek instead of landing near my setup, before I finally take one crazy.gifwink.gif

If I want to get a different perspective on that map I can get an aerial photo using google earth...

Re: Custom Airel-Topo Maps-Cheap

Does anyone know if there is a service that puts the contour lines of a topo map overlayed on an aerial photo. I seem to recall a couple of years ago hearing something about a company that was doing that.

NRCS Data

Here's another good site for GIS data.

http://datagateway.nrcs.usda.gov

Click the "Get Data" link to access everything.

They have topo, aerial photos, soil data, just about anything you could ask for. They flew a lot of Oklahoma recently for new aerial photo's, so you'll have to check for your area. Hope this helps someone.
