I am about to snap

This should probably be in the political room but I need as many answers as I can get before tomorrow.

Anyway, you all know I am in this liberal state of Massachusetts. My kid came home from school today with a letter that he was instructed to write to President Bush regarding the war. The problem was...according to him....they couldn't have their own opinions but instead had to write a letter asking how comes we are in Iraq and we have troops getting killed and that war is bad and that we should bring the troops home.

Now to me, they shouldn't be allowed to do that. They shouldn't make kids base their opinion of the war off of what they think. Am I right or wrong and what would you do?

Re: I am about to snap

I can certainly understand why you are a little more than upset about this assignment; however I would just look at it as another school assignment that forces the student to write about something that he or she may not agree with. (Unless otherwise informed of the teacher’s intentions.)

I remember many times having to write a paper taking the opposite stand on a subject that I was adamantly opinionated on.

You may suggest to the child’s teacher that the students write another letter next week taking the opposite viewpoint.

This would get your point across, and at the same time teach the students a little about the debating process.

Re: I am about to snap

My problem is, if the teacher would of had them write a letter to the President stating their "Own" opinion of the war, it would of been no problem. But when they set the guidelines for the letter, that's a different story. Me going to the school in uniform wouldn't do anything but give them something to stare at. I have instructed my wife to call the school tomorrow morning and arrange for a conference on Thursday. If the liberal teachers up here want to be against the war, that's fine but don't teach it to the kids, let them and their parents form their own opinion about it. I mean now my kid is probably wondering why I do what I do confused.gif

Besides, I am too good looking in my Blues to give them the time of day grin.gif

Go give em heck Mike. They have NO right to ask that of any child.

It's hard enough for a child to have an educated, well informed opinion about most things, never mind war, for cryin out loud. mad.gif That teacher is way out of line. IMO

Re: I am about to snap

You know what, no matter how much crap I talk in here and how tough I sound, bottom line is when I do get to sit down with this woman, I ain't going to say what I want to say because if I do, I will put my son in a position and may cause him to be singled out in the future. I am typing a letter right now, I will post it in here for your review when I am done. I can't go in there because I am not a people person as it is and I'll end up making her cry and everything else. I'll type a letter instead.

Just remember, when I get back from Iraq, my time is limited here in this state wink.gif

Best idea so far.........go to that school and confront her in uniform. I bet you won't have to say very much to get your point across. wink.gif

Re: I am about to snap

I started with a few other things but this is the part about the letter to the President:

Also, I found a letter that he had written to President Bush that I didn’t appreciate either. The letter reads:

Dear Mr. Bush,

Hi my name is Hunter M. I am in third grade and I am 8 years old. I am a student from Forest Ave.

I don’t think we should be at war right now because we are losing Marines, Army guys and Air Force. It’s bad because they

get killed. I think you should bring our troops back.

Thank You for being a good president. I hope you are doing good.

Now according to Hunter, although the kids wrote those letters using their own words, the teacher set the guidelines on what they were to write. I guess the guidelines were up on the wall or chalk board on what they had to base the letter off of? I hope that this is not true and that Hunter thought of all this himself. If it is true, the teachers have no right to have a child write a letter to the President based off the teacher’s opinion of the war. In my opinion, it’s not the teacher’s responsibility to do that. If the teachers in that school oppose the war, that’s one thing but to make a child write a letter based off the teachers opinion of the war in not right. It's hard enough for a child of that age to have an educated, well informed opinion about most things, never mind war and a school teacher doesn’t have to help me teach my kids about what I do and why I do it. I am getting ready to go back to Iraq and if it is true that the teacher had the students write this letter that pretty much opposed the war, it was pretty bad timing let alone unprofessional. Can you elaborate on this a little more? Thank You

Mr. Miller

I am standing by for advise and assistance. BTW, where is our Tominator at anyway. I need his English instruction right now
