going to city hall

About a month ago I got a letter from the city.I deserved it, I had a bunch of oddball stuff lying around the yard, leftover construction materials, some garbage bags the got buried in the snow and never set out for garbage day last year, broken lawnmower etc...I complied, cleaned everything up, bought a new mower, mowed, weed wacked, etc... got the yard looking good. While I was mowing I moved our van around back to the alley and pulled it in behind my garage. We dont drive it much anymore but its legally licensed and runs good, just kind of an extra vehichle in case one of our other ones quits running. Its outta sight, and not blocking the alley. Also theres 2 burning barrels for sticks and stuff back there.

Yesterday I get the mail and theres another letter from the city mad.gifNow there just harrassing me.They want the van outta there, which isnt gonna happen since its both legally licensed and in operable order according to the city ordinace. The second part was about the barrels.I was driving through town last night and stopped at a few houses to visit. My banker, a friend of the mayors, and one of the city employees all had barrels in there yards.I also counted over 24 other burmning barrels that were visible from the road.Nobody else had recieved a letter about them that Ive talked with so far confused.gifWhy wouldnt the banker, the mayors buddy, and the city employe have gotten the same letter? The city employee also has a truck he doesnt drive parked in the entrance to the alley, it blocks the whole alley so you cant get down it.It hasnt moved in months but nobodies said a word.He also happens to be my cousin and finds this whole issue to be terribly amusing. grin.gifSo I asked him when the mayor would be in, and tonight after 4:00 Iget a chance to visit with him.I graduated with the mayor but were not exactly buddies so I dont know how this meetings gonna go.

I know one thing, Im gonna tell him to send the sherriff down instead of sending me more letters in the future. If Im not in violation of anything that should be the end of it.And unless theres another 2 dozen nuisance letters on record about burning barrels Im not moving mine either, it seems to be just a little to coincidental that all the mayors buddies and the "important" people in town havent heard a word about theres.Sorry about the rant, I cant get into city hall till tonight so I thought maybe Id vent in here untill then grin.gifIf im not back by morning someone email my wife that Im in jail shocked.giftongue.gif

You have a neighbour that doesn't like you.

Yeah that's what I was going to say too. Sounds like a neighbor has it out for you. The city usually has better things to do and unless there is a complaint, they usually don't bother with stuff like that. Get out yer guns boys, looks like Horst is going to have a squaring off grin.gif

Re: going to city hall

My Dad put a pool in at our house.....it had to be on the side of the house instead of the back because of terrain problems. We had a neighbor that though himself something of a high fallutin attorney and architect within the city. Case of jealousy ensued and then he reported that the pool was put in with parts of it in front of his house. Now keep in mind that any idiot looking down the front of his house couldn't even see the pool so it clearly wasn't in front of the house.

My dad tried in vain to get the city planning people to come look at it but instead they gave him the permits. So when they came back and said that he had to stop construction (they were smoothing out the liner) and move the pool he went crazy on them.

We ended up winning but not until he had to argue for a while.

Good luck...

You have a neighbour that doesn't like you. That's how these things work. The city doesn't send out clean-up letters unless a formal complaint is filed, and they, in turn, have to act on each complaint.

That's exactly the way it works here. On a rare occassion a zoning inspector might drive by and issue a notice to comply, but usually it's all done by neighbors filing a report with them.

Re: going to city hall

I honestly wish it was a nieghbor but its not the case. Our city council decided to promote economixc development in this town they needed to clean it up first. It sounds great but in reality its turned into a nightmare for the people in town.Heres what theyve done.

Despite the fact that they have 2 people on the payroll who more or less just drive around all day anyway they hired what they call a nuisance officer. His job is to drive around and look for things in peoples yards that shouldnt be there. Our towns got less then 2000 people in it so that took all of about 15 minutes. Now he has nothing better to do than nit pick about stupid things. crazy.gif

Add in the fact I seen him going through my yard one day and went out and had a argument with him, then threw him outta my yard which he had no legal right to be in to start with and now we have a nuisance officer that doesnt like me much. grin.gif

So while the banker, city worker, and the mayors friends and family get things overlooked i get tickets for the same things. He even reported me for animal cruelty once because I had a wiemeriener in the dog pen.Theyre a pretty skinny wormy looking dog anyway and he claimed I wasnt feeding them. The lab in the same pen wieghed over 120 lbs and my little lap dog looked like a turkey he was so fat but he reported it anyway.Luckily the cop was also a dog breeder and knew the other guy was full of crap mad.gifAnyway, 30 minutes till my meeting grin.gif

Re: going to city hall

Things didnt change much, they apologized about the van but then told me my boat trailer was unlicensed. The funny part about that is my cousin that works for the city has the boat that belongs on it down at the sewer ponds where he borrowed it to do somew work for the city last fall mad.gifHe said over 50 letters had been sent out concerning burning barrels and unlicensed vehichles/trailers.Then he told me to give them an estimate on a roof crazy.gifMust of been trying to smooth things over with me grin.gifAnyway, I told him Id worry about my stuff as soon as the people on the city payroll started worrying about thiers, that should get my cousin in trouble grin.gifgrin.gifTeach him to laugh at me.On the bright side Im not in jail and Ill find out tuesday after the city council meeting what thier doing with that roof confused.gif
