NiteRunner
Maybe it's just in my part of Ohio, but has anyone seen any fresh scrapes? I've seen 2 really good ones nicely dug out, etc. both at different spots. Isn't it a little odd to be seeing them?
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Fresh Scrapes I'd say it's very odd. Scrapes are usually associated with mating activities which certainly shouldn't be happening now. Are you sure it's deer thats making them? Sounds like a good spot for trailcam to me. wtnhunt
Re: Fresh Scrapes Nope, dont think it is really all that odd. Deer do in fact take part in scrape activity some throughout the year, but that activity is not exactly the same as the rut time mating scrapes. Read about a study done a few years ago I think in petersens bowhunting or maybe it was in field and stream. Not only do deer scrape year round, but does are also involved in scraping activity. I have watched deer out my back window use a licking branch under an old oak tree and work the ground pretty good quite a few times this time of the year. Tominator
Re: Fresh Scrapes You sure it isn't turkey scratching? Or maybe a washout with all the recent rains?
Bowhntr
Re: Fresh Scrapes I wouldn't say it is odd. However, I don't think I would invest a lot of time in a trail camera watching them now. Like someone else said, deer will scrape year round but they don't constantly check and freshen them like the do in the fall. They may hit them a couple of times then just quit for a while, but like I said I wouldn't call it odd.
slughunter
Re: Fresh Scrapes [ QUOTE ] You sure it isn't turkey scratching? Or maybe a washout with all the recent rains? [/ QUOTE ] I was thinking the same thing, those turkeys dig stuff up pretty good, make it look like a scrape.
wtnhunt
Re: Fresh Scrapes Have seen turkey scratches that looked like scrapes, check for a track. If there is a deer track in the scrape it is most likely a scrape.
VTbowman
Re: Fresh Scrapes Its not a dominant or mating scrape, its a social scrape. Most likely in a spot thats hit year after year by many diffent deer and is being visited recently. I have one like this on my property too and saw its being used recently too. Mine is not dug down but is fairly wide. About 7 foot wide and right down to mud with tons of prints in it. Its in the same spot year after year right where 3 trails meet and it just occured to me this spring that it may be a good spot for a tree stand. LOL So I hung one there a couple weeks ago. NiteRunner
Re: Fresh Scrapes Yes it was made by deer, they had plenty of tracks in it also. Social Scrape, that's one I've never heard...I'm going to have to hit the books again! lol I just always associated them with the rut, but now that you mention it, makes sense. wtnhunt
Re: Fresh Scrapes Social scrapes are hit on and off throughout the year. With does establishing their fawning territories, we usually do see a bit more doe scraping activity this time of the year. Some time when I get a little more time I will have to take a look back in my petersens bowhunting mags, pretty sure I still have the one with the article I was talking about with results of the study on scrapes and scraping activity. wtnhunt
Re: Fresh Scrapes [ QUOTE ] can some1 help me with the difference between them? [/ QUOTE ] Look for deer tracks in them. If it is a scrape, it will most likely have at least one deer track in it.
