heat wave coyote

I got 4 prototype calls in the mail from Joe Bradshaw yesterday ,there was one in particular that I fell in Love with ,the sound was out of this world! I called Joe and told him this call had the sound I was looking for! I knew I was going to have to work out of town today and packed the truck with my gear for calling, just in case I got through working in time to stop by the family farm on the way home and make a stand.

I finished up work around 3:30 ,it was 99 degrees and the wind was blowing 22-35 miles per hour! By then time I got set up to call it was about 4:30 pm and still too dang hot! I started my calling with a puppy whines, switched to a high pitched rabbit in distress and towards the end I was switching back and forth between pup in distress and a rabbit in distress between sneezes {did I mention I am deathly allergic to both rye grass and cotton woods}! The wind was blowing from my right and quartering hard to my left and in front of me towards a fence where I expected to see a coyote.About five minutes into the stand I saw a coyote coming up that same fence row ,about 400 yards out .I started looking for the spot I wanted him to be in when I shot, just before he could cut my wind.I found that spot and if he continued on, he would be there shortly! He checked up 2 or 3 times, each time I would do a puppy whine! He was now almost to the spot I had picked out ,so I let out some yelps free handed ,as I now had both hand on my rifle! He stopped and I squeezed the trigger on my,new to me, but very old ruger .243,the 95 grain Remington AccuTip found it's mark and down he went! It stepped off 180 yards. This is only the second coyote I've called in on our farm both were males, both were mid day ,both times it was near 100 degrees and both were called in by one of Joe's calls, the first being his "screamin demon"

I told you it would be a killer Joe!

Re: heat wave coyote

One of the most succssful sets I've had came at 2:30PM on a hot September afternoon. Did pretty much what you did, but stayed with the pup call.... got three males in less than 30 minutes!

I got one within 20 yards of where I was sitting...with NO camo and under a big live oak...! Sometimes I think those yotes get really confused when its hot and in the afternoon!
