300 Win Mag. or 300 WSM

Ballistically they are equal. The only benefit to the WSM is a smaller overall length gun. This also means there is less weight which gives more recoil. Take your pick. One is not better than the other.

AJ - I read an article in a magazine about the WSM when it was new, don't recall the exact mag, that purportedly measured the recoil of both rounds using the same model of rifle and as close to identical a loading as they could get. And the WSM had quite a bit less recoil. Something to do with the type of powder and the fact that a short fat powder column burned more effeciently than a long thin one. I don't have any first hand experience with the WSM, just repeating something I read...

Re: 300 Win Mag. or 300 WSM

Yes Texan I have heard that the 300 WSM has substantially less recoil than the Win Mag. My only concern is factory ammo for the 300 WSM. Will this last? I am hoping that it catches on for the 300 as people do not see the huge benefits of say a .223 or .243 WSM over there original counterparts.

The though of recoil is pretty complicated but to make it simplified the larger dia shell of the 300 WSM has less psi than the thinner 300 Win Mag. making the force directed back to your shoulder less direct I guess you could say.

People just tell me if this 300 WSM is here to stay. I hope so as I posted earlier I just bought a browing BAR shorttrac in 300 WSM

I think with the 180 grain bullet it is a toss-up. But if you move up to a bigger bullet----I'm pretty sure the 300 Win Mag will have the edge. Plus the whole reason to get the Mag is to shot bigger bullets. It's much like comparing the 308 to the 30/06. If your plans are to hunt Big bears then I would use the 300 Win Mag. If you plan on hunting elk & moose then the 300 WSM or the 30/06.

Re: 300 Win Mag. or 300 WSM

I have a 300 WSM. My gun is lighter but the load is more expensive. But since i don't shoot it much just to check and see if its on at a 100 yards. The Recoil is mild i think. Nothing compared to a 3.5 turkey load, and i never notice recoil when i'm huntng anyways. If you looking for a bench gun get a 223. If your looking for a Venni shreader. This is your gun. I could stick my arm into the exit wound. Amazing blood trail. You hit a deer with this gun you will know.

300 WSM or 300 win mag. Shot both and actualy my Buddy mikes 300 Win mag i feel has more recoil in his A-bolt than my model 70.

Re: 300 Win Mag. or 300 WSM

Texan,

The factors that go into recoil calculations are:

bullet weight

bullet velocity

powder weight

gun weight

If you consult a few reloading manuals, you will find the powder weights are similar between the WSM and the Winnie Mag for the same velocities. Granted the WSM is using a higher pressure but thats due to the slightly smaller combustion chamber. That leaves gun weight. All else equal, lighter gun equals more recoil. A pound lighter gun has more imput to recoil than a few grains of powder.

I think as far as recoil is concerned when he was talking less recoil what he wanted to say was.

The powder is burned evenly throughout the chamber/barrel making the backward force (recoil) last longer but being less sharp. Kind of spreading it out over a period of time versus a majority of it all at once. Both have same recoil but one is spread out every so slightly in more time.

Re: 300 Win Mag. or 300 WSM

I've thought the reason for a Mag was to shoot bigger bullets & a little faster. With that said the 300 Win Mag & 300 WSM are dang near equal with 165's & 180's. But if you move up to larger bullets the 300 Win Mag starts to pull out in front. But that 180 grain bullet is a great elk bullet out of either one. If big bears are on your agenda then consider the 300 Win Mag----but if you can afford a Griz hunt----get a 338.

So I would pick the 300 WSM of those two. But in all honesty they don't shine that much over the ole 30/06. So, that's what I hunt with here in the Rockies.

Good Luck & good hunting.

Re: 300 Win Mag. or 300 WSM

As for the 300 mags...............I have a 300 win mag& a 300 WBY mag. Both are accurate bolt action rifles. I end up using the win mag more because of the ammo prices (cheaper grin.gif) This is true between teh 300 win mag & WSM also. The WSM ammo is more expensive. Just one more thing to consider before you buy. More $$$ for the same performance. Is it worth it to you? That is a question to answer before you buy.

The 30-06 will do anything the mags will do 300 yards & closer..........and the ammo price is about half that of even the cheaper win mag ammo. About 2/3s cheaper than WSM ammo and WAY cheaper than WBY ammo or premium win mag ammo. This allows more practice & becoming a better shot. Worth way more than bullets around the edges with any unpracticed magnum.

I also grab the ol 06 more & more often these days grin.gif Easier on the wallet, lighter & less punishing on the shoulder grin.gifgrin.gif
