Re: UPS came yesterday

Ruth,

Some tips that I have tried.....

Nail knot for the backing to fly line and the fly line to the leader material.....buy and use this tool, it will save you grey hair (keep it in your fly vest for on-the go tying): http://www.orvis.co.uk/store/product_cho...d=18&bhcp=1

When you are done making the nail knot where the leader meets the fly line, coat it with clear fingernail polish. This prevents the tag ends from catching your leader material and tangling it up while casting. If you plan on fishing a lot of wet flies and/or nymphs, use a florescent fingernail polish and you have a built in strike indicator.

For the leader material, I have tried them all. I settled on about 4 pound standard monofilament spooled fishing line. About 1,000 times less expensive than the 8-10 feet of tapered leader you get. For weary fish, I will carry lighter mono. You can waste your money but someday, you will say "New told me".

For the knot connection directly to the fly, I will use the palomar knot most often: http://www.fish4fun.com/palomarknot.htm

If I have something like a wooly booger or a streamer that needs action, I will sometimes tie a surgeon's knot for extra wobble action: http://www.killroys.com/knots/surgloop.htm. Just be sure to check it frequently if you are catching a lot of fish becuase it can wear.

Lastly, here is a great fly that works wonders anywhere from saltwater, to bassin, to troutin.....you can tie variations of it (with and without the heavy eyes) and different colors. For trout, I have great luck with black or Olive. http://www.anglersvice.com/retail/common...+of+the+page%2E

Good luck, I just fished the Nantahala river in NC (a great river if you have the chance) and caught probably 15 brookies (10-12"), a couple browns (10-12"), one rainbow (10-12") and a monster rainbow that was probably 4 pounds and huge. No camera with me though.

Great luck with your new obsession....I mean hobby.

PM any questions you have, I have been fly fishing for somewhere around 15 years now so I have learned a lot of the do's and don'ts.

Yep! When you get the surgeons figured out you will be all set.

I recommend contacting your local Trout Unlimited chapter and see if they offer fly fishing classes.

Re: UPS came yesterday

I ended up having to buy a brand new lawnmower because Sears (idiots) had their mower engines built off-spec so that they could profit from the mower parts having to be bought from them. They couldn't manage to get me a $6 set of carb parts (this went on for WEEKS) so I had to buy a new mower.

I will never buy a sears mower again.

Re: UPS came yesterday

New, sears sent my parts(a belt and a tuneup kit) out, but UPS screwed up and delivered it to the wrong house. If UPS hadnt of screwed up I would have had my parts just 6 days after ordering them. Unfortunately as my luck goes now the parts are out of stock and have been backordered.

So sears really was not initially at fault.

Re: UPS came yesterday

Thanks for the tips New and everyone else! i'm looking forward to getting on the water:) I just found an online illustration of how to tie the nail know using a nail and it actually doesn't look that hard. Maybe because in one of my rec. classes in college, we had to tie knots and I learned how to tie a knot similar to that, just fewer times wrapping around. Of course, I may not find it that easy when I try it,lol!

Re: UPS came yesterday

I tried using a nail and it was very difficult. The nail knot especially is hard to tie because you have to tuck in the tag end of the leader through the wraps. It can be downright hard to do, especially on the water when the fish are biting and your leader just broke. Tying them at home with a nail is easy but when on the water is when it gets difficult.

With the tool that I linked for you, I can make the knot in about 30 seconds total (including getting out the tippet material, etc.) while not even looking at the material. It makes it really fast and easy when on the water. I leave it dangling from my vest.

Good luck,

New said it, the nail doesn't work that great. Actually the nail knot is very hard to tie with monofilament or flourocarbon.

I only use it to connect backing to the fly line. Those are two heavier lines, and easy to handle (I use the tool new's talking about for that knot too).

Here's the way you can do it (the easiest way IMO):

backing to reel - uni knot (aka duncan loop)

backing to fly line - nail knot

add a loop to the end of your fly line - then connect leaders with a surgeon's loop. (you can pre-tie leaders before you go out fishing)

tippet to leader - surgeon's knot

tippet to fly - uni knot (aka duncan loop)

that will work just fine.

Re: UPS came yesterday

Nah nah nah muggs, you got it all wrong.

Actually mostly right.

Typically, I am very lazy when tying knots and I will tie a fairly heavy piece of mono with a nail knot to the fly line (about a foot's worth). On the tippit end, I will tie the surgeons knot (I call it a handshake knot). Then on the reel end of the tippet, I will tie a correstponding surgeons loop. Then connect the two.

I don't typically suggest this for beginners because it isn't very aerodynamic and is prone to catch the fly or cause bird's nest problems at the end of the fly line. Even someone like me who has been casting a while has it happen....especially if you are throwing flies too heavy or too light for your setup.

As for the nail knot, I have found nothing that works as well for attaching leader material to the fly line itself.

Re: UPS came yesterday

new, you have to get those plastic loops. They go over the fly line and stay put with a "chinese finger trap" style connection. There's also a little piece of plastic you heat that melts to strengthen the connection.

this way, you tie some loops on the end of your leader and connect leader to fly line with a loop-to-loop connection. its quick and easy.

you're way works, I used to do it that way (with the heavy mono) but these loops make it a nicer connection, stronger too.

so I was actually, I was completely right. grin.gif j/k
