smo
I was wanting to plant something to draw deer to a semi-wooded area where I hunt. I don't want to plow and disk up the ground. I would scratch the ground up with a rake. What would be the best seed to plant for Nov. in Va.
Tominator
Re: What is a good cold weather plot? Whitetail institute makes a no-plow seed that's designed to work in your situation. Do you want it to be ready for November, or do you want to plant it in November? Hopefully the former.
Guest MarylandQDMA
Re: What is a good cold weather plot? Brassicas. The brassicas family when planted in August/September take about 45 days to mature. most deer will not touch them because they are bitter to the tast and contain large amounts of starch UNTILL the first good freeze. At that point, the starches will turn into sugger and the plants become sweet. The deer at this point will hammer them. however, if they have never seen them before it may take awile for them to realise they like them. dogdoc
Re: What is a good cold weather plot? then plant around the end of August. Brassicas are a good choice but don't put all your eggs in one basket--that is why i like a mixture. Most of the no-till products contain a nice mix that will provide forage all winter. LETMGROW
Re: What is a good cold weather plot? dogdoc, we have had excellent with brassicas up here in the north. I am curious though, as we usually have a killing frost by the third week of september and the brassicas become tasty to the deer, how do they attract deer in your part of the country? Do you, or when do you get a frost? This may seem like a dumb question but I remember my days at Ft. Sill as hot, dry and can't imagine frost in OK. wtnhunt
Re: What is a good cold weather plot? Bet OK is probably a lot like here weather wise. We get our first good hard frost usually towards the end of October, but the last few years the weather has not had any kind of norm. BuckNrut
Re: What is a good cold weather plot? WhitetailInstitute has a new product called "Winter Greens". You just broadcast the seed, but disking is recommended so this may not work for you.
