Re: UFC....Hughes Dominates Gracie

Wow I figured he would win but not in the first round. I miss the days of Vitor (the pheonom Belfort) crackin skulls.

Re: UFC....Hughes Dominates Gracie

Sounds like Hughes nearly tore Gracies arm off in a arm bar, but somehow Gracie got out of it......he only delayed the inevitable, though......

Don't get me wrong....Gracie is a great fighter, but the speed of todays UFC was what I think was the difference.......Gracie is methodacle (spelling) and Hughes is just radicle.......striking, submissions or just grappling, it just doesn't matter to Hughes....he's that well rounded of a fighter....

Re: UFC....Hughes Dominates Gracie

I picked Hughes to win and it went just the way i thought it would, and i would have bet the house on it. But Gracie is not the same fighter he used to be. In thier prime i would bet the house on Gracie. and i would still have it, because Gracie would have won. You can,t come back. Just look of all the heavyweight boxers who stayed to long or tryed a come back.Joe (Brown Bomber) Louis - Won 68 Lost 3, 54 KO..... Muhammed (Louisville Lip) Ali- won 56 Lost 5, 37 KO etc.,etc.

Gracie isn't exactly making a "comeback". He's still fighting very successfully under other fighting organizations. Even in his Royce's prime, I'm taking Hughes.

Not me...I have been involved in martial arts and fighting activities since the first UFC and have watched Royce and Rickson battle there way into fame as far as martial arts are concerned. Back when the UFC started, the fighters were everyday joes that dabbled in martial arts. Now-a-days, UFC is their job and they spend the day training for fights as opposed to working at the plant then training at night. The toughest fighters back then always appeared to be the wrestlers. Royce beat guys like the huge Dan Severn (wrestler) and Shamrock. He has fought other mammoth men (nothing but muscle) like Kimo, and submitted them. I think it boils down to the fact that in submission fighting, strength is not the main issue, it is more about technique. A technical fighter can submit a stronger opponent much more regularily that the other way around. I have been a longtime practicioner of Jiu Jitsu and full contact fighting, and this seems to be true. JMO though.... but I think years ago before Hughes was versed in submissions, Gracie would have won.

swamphunter, i couldn't agree with you more, Like you i have been involved for a while, i still remember when Jim Brown was a judge smile.gif...I think in Gracies Prime he would have wipped his but with hughes....simply because Hughes would ahve been another Tank Abott..Gracie brought Grappling into the light and to where it is today. no doubt....hughes is an amazing fighter, but he wouldn't be without Gracie.

Naturally, these are only matters of opinion and should only be addressed as such. But your last sentence says it all:

Hughes is very well versed in submissions, just look at his latest victories over Gracie, GSP, Trigg, etc. Not only is he a beast at 170lbs, (natural weight is said to be @ 195lbs), but he's a very technical fighter. He does not have a belt rank in Jitz, but I don't see him having much trouble gaining a black belt if he were to try for it. 9 times out of 10, I'm still taking Hughes.

You are right, they are ALL opinions. Hughes has been submitted before also. No one doubts the fact that today Hughes is probably more dominant. Years ago against Gracie, he would not have had a very good chance at all. Not without finishing moves that a wrestler just does not learn. All fighters now must know some grappling, or Jiu Jitsu.

Re: UFC....Hughes Dominates Gracie

I think a lot of people under estimate Hughes' Jitz skills because he does not have a belt paired with the fact that he has a phenomenal wrestling background.

PS Swamp; my brother has his first mma fight on July 15th at Madtown Throwdown in Madison. Should be a pretty cool event.

whats your brother's discipline?...good luck to him, my first fight..i was scarred crapless, i thought the guy was huge..truth is i outweighed him by 15lbs :0..hahaha....hughes has amazing grappling and submission skills, dont need a belt rank to tell you that, however i still say that without gracie, it would still be a bunch of tank abotts smile.gif
