HOW MANY ACTUALLY SHOOT THE BIG MAGNUMS, 3" 3 1/2"

Recommended Posts

I have used the 3" heavily for waterfowl and some pheasant and turkeys. Now with my Moss 935 , I will be using the 3 1/2" on occasions also. I have 3 chokes for it right now. A ported, extended super full, a full choke, and a modified choke. I'm not sure if there is improved cylinder available for this or not yet. I need also to check into how small a shot I can buy in the 3" and bigger shocked.gif All my chokes can handle everything sopposedely, so I need to see how small a shot hevi-shot can come in. I wish that you could use lighter ammo in this gun, but I guess it doesn't eject light loads. Any suggestions and oppinions would be great cool.gif

Re: HOW MANY ACTUALLY SHOOT THE BIG MAGNUMS, 3\" 3 1/2\"

I got some 3 1/2 buckshot last year to test pattern it. The 3" had more pellets in the target and less in the shell. Didn't see much point in killing my shoulder for less chance of hitting a deer.

Well, for standard ammo in 3" shells the smallest I have ever seen is 8 shot. I am fairly sure there is smaller shot produced from what I am told, but #8 is the smallest I see locally here for pheasant, dove, grouse, etc..

As for Hevi Shot, the smallest I have seen for Hevi is #7's which carry the same energy at 40 yards as a #5 lead shot, so you're not loosing anything as far as killing power goes.

I hope I understood what you were asking. If not, just ignore me lol laugh.gif

My Benelli and 870 are both 3" capable guns. I shoot 3" shells for turkey, deer, and waterfowl out of the 870 on a regular basis.

Every once in a while I'll throw a mag 3" into the Benelli when hunting late season pheasant in high winds, but that is a rare occasion.

I've never shot a 3 1/2" shell.

i don't shoot the 3.5inch mags because i don't like the recoil. if you're shooting 1 or 2, they're not bad, if you have a sweet day full of shooting, they'll beat you up pretty good

Re: HOW MANY ACTUALLY SHOOT THE BIG MAGNUMS, 3\" 3

I shoot the 3 1/2" stuff in both 12 ga. and 10 ga. There isn't much way to tell if you're better off than shooting 3" shells until you try. Sometimes a 3" shell will shoot better than a 3 1/2".......not always. Usually, if it happens that way, it's with lead shot. Steel is usually a case of "The more, the better". Usually. wink.gif You will pay an extra price at the butstock for using 3 1/2" shells. It's not so bad with steel as it is with lead or alloys (and your auto will suck a bunch of recoil up). Only your time spent patterning will tell you whether it's going to be worth the tradeoff.
