Re: HOW MANY HUNTERS IN HERE USE 3 1/2\" SHELLS ?

I typically don't use 3 1/2" shells for waterfowling. I primarily use 3" shells in BB, #2s, or #4s depending on the location I'm hunting (i.e. open water vs small pot holes). I've had best results with Winchester Supreme or Super X Dryloks in #2s through an Improved Cylinder choke. Of course I haven't shot every waterfowl choke/load combination out there but those seem to work best for me. Speaking of chokes, I primarily use Improved Cylinder and Modified. Steel shot, just like heavy shot, doesn't compress like lead does coming out of the barrel. Shooting a tight choke can cause damage to the barrel and/or the choke. Personally, the tightest choke I would shoot with steel shot is Modified. I know I didn't answer your original question but for me...3" shells work just as good as 3 1/2s...plus they're cheaper. grin.gif

I've been known to splurge on the long shell. I don't care what anyone says, they work. Everyone who says they can do the same with a 3" or 2.75" aren't using the 3.5" to their potential.

As much as it hurts, try shooting about 10 clay targets with them. They shoot slightly different. I usually use Winchester black box shells. Good stuff...knock those honkers out of the sky....

I go w/ the theory, bigger is better.

I shoot 3.5" #2's for ducks and 3.5" BB's for honkers. I tried several different brand shells last year and decided i'd be ordering a case or so of Winchester Dryloks before this season gets underway.

As far as chokes go, i tinker a little bit throughout the season but more times than not you'll find me using the Patternmaster.

Sounds about right. Sometimes I'll go with BBB if the geese are skittish. Oddly enough..........for as much tinkering as I do with turkey chokes........I usually just use a factory modified for the smaller shot and improved cylinder for the BB and BBB. Who knows, though. I could be completely missing the boat by not trying some extended aftermarket tubes. Probably am.

I've got no use for Remington's lead loads. But their steel loads always seemed to hit harder out of my 10 ga. Try several brands. wink.gif

I do... 10ga grin.gif The 10 is my goose gun of choice.

(for ducks I use 3" 12 ga)

Other guys I hunt with do use 3.5 12 ga for both ducks and geese.

I am like you but I use my 10 ga for all waterfowl ...recoil is no problem and I have done 3 boxes in morning hunt .... and if I could i would probly use a 8 ga if I was aloud cool.gif

i only use 3.5's, use the 3.5 2's and 3's on ducks and 3.5 BB's on geese, i always shoot drylocks, i love winchester shells bout all that goes in my gun for waterfowl, remington for lead but, the opener of duck i buy a few boxes of the winchester supreme, little more expensive but i treat myself for the first of the season and then stick with the dryloks when i run out

I plan on shooting some 3 " and 3 1/2" mags for pattern,. I'm hoping the 3 " will be the ticket as far as pattern and recoil. I'm sure my Moss. 935 will help absorb some of the recoil also. I will need to deal with different chokes and shots before I get done. smirk.gif

I've used 3" for most of my shotgunning needs, but since I bought a brand new 870 Express Super Mag in March (before I knew I was having surgery) I plan on using 3 1/2" for both waterfowl and turkey.

I just use the 2 3/4" in my 870 Wingmaster, that's all it's chambered for. I'd probably use 3" if I could! I think 3" is plenty of power. Heck I usually have no problem with the 2 3/4" #4's for ducks. I carry some Nitro BB magnums with me if I think geese are gonna be flyin'. cool.gif
