He's 12, but still doesn't like the recoil of a .22 or shotgun. Having said that, I'm looking at getting him an RWS Model 34 for getting through this whole school year with straight A's. I used it to teach my nephews (7 and 13) how to handle a gun and how to shoot. It is a little louder than a .22 but i like it a lot better. Let us know what you end up goin with. Be sure he's got enough "hind end" to break the gun during the cocking stroke, though. It takes a good bit of effort. I found the open sight to be fairly worthless. [/ QUOTE ] I appreciate the suggestion, but because of the proximity of neighbors, this will have to be an air rifle, not firearm. The open sights situation is unfortunate Don. My son wears glasses and doesn't like a scope. He tends to "chase the zero" quite a bit. Is there a better air rifle out there for a $200 price tag? She prefers to shoot her .243 though, it is easier for her to chamber a round than it is for her to break open and put a pellet in the pellet gun. We tried shooting the other day, and unfortunately she didnt do so well with her arm in the cast. I wouldnt hesitate to get him the air rifle Chris, but would only let him shoot supervised. We usually scramble for the Daisy 880 now when I/we see a varmint in the garden. I always watch, more for the joy of watching my son stalk his prey than anything like safety. I'm not as fond of the Gamo's as I am the RWS. Maybe a lower-end Beman?? Bottom line..........the RWS 34 is a lot of bang for the buck. The standard Daisy and Crosman flat-pointed ones don't do to well in mine. I shoot Gamo Magnums (they are a pointed design) out of mine with pretty good results. We typically shoot the pointed pellets because we typically do not shoot at paper targets. I've considered getting the hollow points as well, just to mess around and see if they're effective. I have a Daisy Grizzly in MO break-up (I know, it's not a good thing to talk about MO on the RT forums ). It's a BB/pellet rifle topped with a Daisy scope. It's a pump pneumatic air rifle that packs a punch. Whether you're hunting grackles or rabbits, it's awesome! One winter a few years ago, there was a squirrel about fifty yards away in a tree. His pattern was all over the place and so was mine. There was a fair size hole in the box that went into the actual gun box too, but I don't see any damage. I'm going to pattern it at 15 yards and see what happens. I was not expecting the recoil to be that bad either. Might have to step up to the recoiless model. My son does not care for recoil at all. Its a piece of junk! Solution: Send it back to RWS! Get a Benjamin .22 caliber pellet rifle. Only thing is... you have to pump 5-6 times for a squirrel or a rabbit. Which is very easy only takes a couple seconds. I can a golf ball at 20 yards about every time with it. and its more accurate than i am. With the Piece o' junk a.k.a. RWS I could'nt even hit a baseball everytime at 15 yards! Absolutely no recoil on the Benjamin either. I wish id have seen this thread sooner. I just (as we speak) came in from a walk with my 34 and shot a bumblebee off a red clover flower at about 10 yards (granted, with a scope.......the factory open sights are not very good ). We got my dad a Benjamin a year ago and he's got a hard time getting it pumped up.....and dad ain't no runt. Besides that, you're definitely stuck with open sights on the Benjamin because they can't invent a mount that'll stay tight on them. I wouldn't write the 34 off just yet. Give it another try. Then I filled 3 pop cans and I set 1 at 15, and the other two on the fence which is 45 yards away. We have the windage sight all the way over to the right (gun is too long for my son so far), but he nailed the near can with the first shot, high and left, so I told him to aim low and left, and he centered it. That gun has some velocity, the can literally exploded! So then he took aim at the far cans. First shot he missed, I told him to aim low left again, and second shot he nailed it. Then a blackbird landed in my garden. I actually hit the stupid thing, right in the neck. Then Joe hit the last can after 2 or 3 attempts. Jury is still out I think. I'd really like to scope it and see what happens. I think I'm going to end up agreeing with Don, I don't like that type of iron sights. Doc [/ QUOTE ] I might be using it wrong, but it's a problem with getting the proper eye relief, the reticle appears to float so you're always trying to find the target.
