wtnhunt
Always enjoy watching the hawks gliding through the air. Took a few pics of hawks I thought worthy of sharing recently and been meaning to post them, just finally getting around to posting them. DSGB
Re: hawks Nice pics! I enjoy watching them too. I have a couple stands that I see them almost every time. There's even a couple around the house that I watch. They seem to live off of doves.

[/ QUOTE ] Pretty sure these were red tailed hawks Chris. Hard to say for sure, they were a pretty good ways up. Would guess their wingspan to be near 50 inches or so, but as you might recall from the kites I am not the greatest at guessing birds wingspans . Red tails don't have bars on their wings like that, especially on the tail. I think what you have there is a red shouldered hawk. Bunch of other pictures here: http://www.pbase.com/garrettlau/redshoulderedhawk&page=2 At your service.
wtnhunt
Re: hawks These pics are not all of one bird. You might be right. Will have to go and take a look in my book Chris, thought for sure red tailed hawks had some variations of bars in both their tail and wing feathers from juvenile to adult. Tominator
Re: hawks The bottom one might be a redtail. Can't really see much of his tail to tell. Redtails don't have any banding like the other pictures, juvenile or adult.
wtnhunt
Re: hawks You are probably right Chris. The first three are probably a mature red shouldered and the last one I am pretty certain is a red tailed. What gets me is that my book shows illustrations of juvenile red tails with barring on both the wings and the tail feathers though . So how old are hawks when they are no longer determined to be juvenile? Got some more bird pics I may eventually upload.
Tominator
Re: hawks [ QUOTE ] barring on both the wings and the tail feathers though [/ QUOTE ] Hmmmm, I'd like to see that picture. My Peterson's guide shows one bar on the tail feather of a juvenile, but not like your picture. As far as juvenile vs. adult plummage, it depends on the bird. I think bald eagles don't get their white head for like 5 years or so! I'd have to read my guide when it comes to Redtails.

Tominator
Re: hawks I'll be. What book did that come from? Based on that drawing, your photo does look like a juvenile redtail.
wtnhunt
Re: hawks Ken Kaufmans birds of north america focus guide. Think I told you before this book has some great illustrations. If it were not for the size I would say these probably were red shouldered. So do you think a juvenile red tail could have a 4 ft wingspan though Chris? Tominator
Re: hawks Yeah, the red tail is a pretty big buteo. Most birds reach mature size within a year. Plummage is a different story though. Some of the bigger raptors don't get adult plummage for years.
