Re: Deer doggin

Cool the hurricane 2 years ago really tore our land up in Gaston NC and I dont think its really been the same since, I have seen more big bucks since the storm but a lot of the good places are really hard to get to now. It tore my uncles dogpens up and they ended up catching dogs during hurricane isabel. Gottem all back and then we had our dog named Jack get in a fight with a coyote this year at the end of the year and then before opening day we had to put down the monarch of our kennel and then the 2nd week in Gaston our 1 eyed dog got hit by a car and my grandfather had to put her down. My uncle jokes about it to keep the mood light because everybody loved that dog, she had the sweetest disposition, he says she got "Blind sided" haha it gets everybody relaxed bc I killed my first deer in front of that dog so I miss her everytime I kill one. She would run her tail off. So would buck (the one we put down) but weve got a pup off buck left whos acting just like he did when he was young so were hopin bear will be just as if not better than buck.

Re: Deer doggin

Most people who frown apon it dont understand it. Everybody up here loves it because when summer and archery seasons come in deer vs. car rates go up and wen dog season comes in they go down. Its a proven statistic around here. But most people dont take the time to try to understand it they just dont like it because they think its cheating or other junk like that.

Re: Deer doggin

Where I grew up in Florida it was common practice to run deer with dogs. I will agree, most that frown on it have never heard a good run. I love hearing them dogs on a good run, and hearing them get closer and closer, that will surely get the adrenaline pumping. Boy I miss that!

Sure it's fun. But the irresponsible hunters are the ones who ruin it for everyone else. Numerous times I've had dogs run my deer off while on the stand.

A lotta guys don't respect the law or other hunters. They will take their dogs out to STILL HUNT ONLY areas and turn them loose. OR they will turn their dogs loose overnight after dog season is over and then those dogs will chase all the deer off for us hunters in our stands.

I wind up "dog hunting" when I'm trying to hunt deer. Not fun at all.

Re: Deer doggin

True there are a lot of irresponsible people out there. But thats the problem with the way the world works. Nobody can control it but its either let everybody get away with murder or punish everybody so either way we (the people who abide by the laws and dont turn out where they arent supposed to) get the raw end of the deal. I know its extremely dificult to punish only the bad people and not the good but it just sucks that thats the way it has to be. You know? I just wish those people would have the common sense to realize that by doing what they are they are ruining the sport we all love to do and if they keep it up their actions could very well lead to its demise.

Re: Deer doggin

I was hunting at Tara in MS as year ago in January. Some dink's dogs ran by my stand 2 days in a row messing up my hunt. I know the dogs don't know property lines but the owner shouldn't have been hunting them if he didn't have enough land. I can say that if I had a gun instead of a bow there would have been a few dead dogs. That is just uncalled for. I know the guides down there at Tara were looking for the guys but I don't know if they ever found him or not. I didn't pay that kind of money to have a pack of dogs mess up my hunt. I'm sure under the right conditions it can be enjoyable to some. This just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Re: Deer doggin

I have that problem with coonhunters rifleman. They let the dogs go to far and sometimes end up on our property...most of the time they run the river bottoms, which happens to be where I hunt most of the time. So my deer get jumped at night and needless to say don't show in the morning time.

Thats no better. I believe that the owners should be responsible for their dogs. That means tresspassing as well. If the dogs cross the line the owner should be fined. I think things like that would go along way to keep them inline.

Re: Deer doggin

Wait a minute. This was started as a post for us dogdrivers to talk about our hunting, no need to down it fellas. I understand you guys can speak your mind its a free country but comon. Both are legitamate gripes however, lets not start a fight guys sound good? I dont wanna turn every deer doggin convo into an argument. Dont hijack the thread fellas.

Lilmiss, haha yea they make noise but thats the best part. Some people go to sleep listening to ocean tapes but the fellas round here listen to coon hound and fox hound chases haha. Its like music to our ears. The dogs pretty much do the drive for us. We put them in and they smell the deers trail and sort of half bark if at all, but when they finally jump the deer they let loose and you know whats happening. I cant describe the shakes I get when I hear the dogs getting closer...and closer...and closer... and then hear crashing and then see the deer oooo sends chills up my spine just thinkin about it and then it makes me slouch to think that I gotta wait untill OCTOBER haha. Its not only an exciting way to hunt but its a way for us to show what our dogs can do. I love to kill a deer in front of my uncles hounds because I know he takes pride knowing that the hounds he raised from pups were running a deer that I shot. Its great.

Wow ya learn somethin new everyday. I didnt think Canada allowed it. Thats what were in, swamp. We sit on the edge of the largest swamp on the east coast I beleive. Its great deer and awesome bear land but your not rootin them out with a man drive haha. I just love hunting that way.

Re: Deer doggin

Hey now Coonhunters don't scare them deer off. Unless the dogs aren't broke from deer, But that's what an E-Collar is for, They won't mess with them. We've made trees and while shining sometimes you will see deer bedded down not 30 yards away.

Dogs can't see an Invisable Property Line. Dogs can get deep when trying to find a coon and if they don't open we'll put the tracker on them and see where they are. But that doesn't mean your going to catch them! The last thing I want to do is spend all night looking for my hound only for someone to say they shot it because it was spooking the deer. Not Right IMO.

Re: Deer doggin

I have family in the mountains of western NC/eastern Tennesse. I know that in the early 19 hundreds my great great grandpa and his "club" (if you will) ran dogs for bear and maybe deer. He smoked a blackie that was covered in a 5" thick layer of fat!
