Guest deerhntnwithdogs
Re: Deer doggin good lord, thats a fat bear haha. He was eating good. I know one that came from round here 3 or so years ago I beleive and it was 400 lbs I beleive but it was addicted to this barrell that just magically kept producing honey buns haha. Wasnt me but Ive seen pics and for all the honeybuns that bear ate, it had maybe 1" of fat on it. I was amazed. -Chase
The_Kat
Re: Deer doggin Ya, I guess it's different when ya see the deer movement change from a daily pattern to having coonhunters come in one night and the whole week following they don't move. Maybe it wasn't the dogs, but thats who I blame. I wouldn't never shoot a collared dog. We ran into a similar situation with connhunters last year when their hounds came up in our yard and chased some sheep. Needless to say we put them both down and the owners showed up about 30 minutes later...I felt bad for them, but they said they'd done the same thing if it was their livestock being attacked... My uncle lost some dogs to angry landonwers once while he was coonhunting. I guess it's just a risk ya take when ya use dogs with hunting? Guest deerhntnwithdogs
Re: Deer doggin It depends if the dogs come on hunting land thats no reason to shoot them but when they attack livestock or people like you said then yes Id put them down. Its not right to shoot them becuase the messed up your deer hunt once though, your taking a dog somebody has worked so hard to train and raise and feed and just killing it because it got away from the pack and crossed land somebody just happened to be hunting on and they killed it thats not right. If its got a collar or it looks like it could be somebodies dog then leave it alone but if its covered in ticks and no collar and its a mutt its probly wild id shoot it. There are no excuses for farm cats though haha.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Deer doggin [ QUOTE ] We ran into a similar situation with connhunters last year when their hounds came up in our yard and chased some sheep. [/ QUOTE ] I caught 3 dogs last deer season running stock on the ranch I hunt. One was a St. Bernard, another was a Pyrenees, and the 3rd was a Daschund. Don't ask me what that Daschund was doing running with those two big dogs, but all three met the same end. And I was at least 2 miles from the nearest property line, so it isn't like they just wandered over from some neighbor's yard. Dog owners have a responsibilty to their dogs to keep them under control and in areas where they belong. If a dog strays and is taken out by a landowner or hunter, I blame the dog owner, not the dog. Guest deerhntnwithdogs
Re: Deer doggin I agree with you completely, and I bet theres some really PO'd people out there lookin for there St. Bernard, Pyrenes and Daschund haha. Those dogs arent hunting dogs anyway so Id definetly put them down just for the plain fact that I wouldnt want to try to catch them haha. Dakota
Re: Deer doggin Ok...I resent the Daschund part. I have a black and tan mini at my house. Kind of a touchy subject there for me. Dakota
Guest deerhntnwithdogs
Re: Deer doggin Haha Thats ok I killed a deer in front of one. My first deer. It busted out in the path, I killed it and then 3 of my uncles dogs who are all know not with us anymore came out and right behind them was the little shorthair black and tan Daschund haha. I thought it was really funny to see all the hounds in the dog box and that weiner dog in there just chilling like the rest lol.
NiteRunner
Re: Deer doggin Messing with livestock is a different thing then just a lost hound. We have horses and the last thing you want is for them to be attacked by some careless neighbors dog and possibly run through the fence, etc. How would you like it if one day your pet got loose and crossed onto your nieghbors and they just shot it, because it trespassed. Same principle. Maybe I would feel differently if I wasn't a coonhunter or so attached to my dogs. We even have to worry about people shooting at us on land we have Permission to Hunt. Why some people do this is beyond me, but dogs have been shot off trees before, just because they were and doing what they were bred and trained for. Sometimes you have to wonder... rifleman25
Re: Deer doggin I just believe that the owner should be accountable for their dogs. If your dog tresspasses you should darn sure be holding a ticket at the end of the day. I have no intentions of starting a fight but I paid some hard earned money for that hunt at Tara last year and to have it messes up more than once by lazy irrisponsible people with some dogs really put a bad impression on me. I just can't look at it as acceptable after that. I have heard countless similar tales as well which leaves me to believe that many people must thinks it's ok for their dogs to cross property lines therefore angering me about their lack of ethics. drkillemquick
Re: Deer doggin Some people are just idiots. I keep VERY close tabs on my lab, and if it ever got loose and somebody shot it, it would get pretty ugly quick( I have not had a dog get loose or run free in 12 years of owning labs). There is a real difference between people who just let their dogs run wild and responsible owners. What is ticking me off right now is a farmer who lives up the road from me, he has three hounds he uses for hunting, and the rest of the year they run loose. For the past week and a half, I go out on my back deck and can hear the dogs chasing deer, and I have seen them chasin g the deer across fields as well. It's June, the fawns are dropping and here are these dogs, running the deer day and night. I have made comments to the owner about his dogs, and yet they are still out there loose chasing everything in sight. I know it's not the dogs fault, and I don't think I could shoot a dog for any reason, but man they have me tempted.
Guest deerhntnwithdogs
Re: Deer doggin Do it. Dont let him know but there are times when you know it should be done. If hes letting them run loose and they have no collars and they are running deer this time of the year, for the sake of your deer herd shoot the dogs. Im sorry to say it but those dogs dont need to be killing everything in sight and running all the deer. If he kept up with them it would be a different story but right now dogs should not be out they will murder your deer herd.
drkillemquick
Re: Deer doggin Luckily my hunting land is about 5 miles from my house, on the opposite side of a small village. So it's not "my " deer they are running but they are ticking me off none the less! I have even called the local dog warden and the impression he gives me is that he is not going to be bother to try to round them up. If I can catch then fine he'll come. These dogs run loose so much they are half wild as it is, and while I am comfortable handling dogs, I am not real anxious to try to collar any of the three. Guest deerhntnwithdogs
Re: Deer doggin If you hear thenm snap at a person or attack livestock then kill them right off. I love dogs they are a great thing in this world and they bring very much joy to me and a lot of fellow hunters and people too. But when they are wild and act wild and snap at people or threaten peoples feeling of safety then its time to get rid of them plain and simple
Dakota
Re: Deer doggin Ok...how did this thread go from running dogs for deer to shooting dogs that run OFF your deer?!?!?! For the sake of some hunters that this subject is touchy for, let's get this thread back on track, ok? Dakota
Guest deerhntnwithdogs
Re: Deer doggin Dakota dude thats not even what were talking about. heathcoerracin
Re: Deer doggin [ QUOTE ] Wait a minute. This was started as a post for us dogdrivers to talk about our hunting, no need to down it fellas. I understand you guys can speak your mind its a free country but comon. Both are legitamate gripes however, lets not start a fight guys sound good? I dont wanna turn every deer doggin convo into an argument. Dont hijack the thread fellas. Lilmiss, haha yea they make noise but thats the best part. Some people go to sleep listening to ocean tapes but the fellas round here listen to coon hound and fox hound chases haha. Its like music to our ears. The dogs pretty much do the drive for us. We put them in and they smell the deers trail and sort of half bark if at all, but when they finally jump the deer they let loose and you know whats happening. I cant describe the shakes I get when I hear the dogs getting closer...and closer...and closer... and then hear crashing and then see the deer oooo sends chills up my spine just thinkin about it and then it makes me slouch to think that I gotta wait untill OCTOBER haha. Its not only an exciting way to hunt but its a way for us to show what our dogs can do. I love to kill a deer in front of my uncles hounds because I know he takes pride knowing that the hounds he raised from pups were running a deer that I shot. Its great. [/ QUOTE ] Hearin a dog run puts chills on me! thats all i got to say!! And its the best chills i ever had!!
spyderpancake
Re: Deer doggin I shot my first deer when I was 9 years old on a dog drive, and have shot 4 more since then. It is just about the only way to hunt some of the swampy junk around here. There is just no way to describe hearing a low-voiced sounding off every once in a while as he trails, and then the whole pack start bawling when they jump. Then you are standing there, adrenalin coursing thru your body as every bit of you is tensed up, trying to spot a flash of brown. Then when you hear the crashing in the brush...man, you can't get any better than that!!!
