I just don't get it

Hunting scenario..

Sitting in a treestand or ground blind for hours waiting for a decent buck to walk in. Finally, there he is. The wind is in my favor, I am really well concealed, he is alone and totally unaware of my presence. He is at 60 yards standing completely broadside, I have my very well sighted (and trusted) 30-06 in hand. His front leg is in the forward position and his head is down. Totally oblivious to my being here. Just before I pull the trigger, I whsitle or grunt to make him lift his head, look directly towards me and put him on high alert...for the shot. confused.gif

I have been seeing this more and more frequently on hunting shows now-a-days and can't for the life of me, figure out why they would take the chance of losing a deer, just to get the head up for the shot? confused.gif

My 6 year old boy asked me why they do it and I couldn't give him an answer other than for it was for TV purposes only. Is this something I have been forgetting to do for years worth of killing dozens of deer deader than doornails, when they were not aware of my being there? Should I start so I fit in?? confused.gifblush.gifgrin.gif

What is your opinion on this.

Re: I just don\'t get it

Heck no.

ONLY make a noise to stop a trotting or runnning deer not to lift the head for some picture perfect shot.

Every deer I see shot on TV would of been shot like 20 minutes earilier if it were me. LOL

I no longer wait for that picture perfect shot I take whats given to me as it may only be the one shot I get...

They are hard to come by as it is dont risk blowing it is my opinion...

Re: I just don\'t get it

I have noticed this lately as well. I really dont care if it's head is up or down when it's shot. I think it makes these guys on t.v look like fools actually. Show us the animal up close when it's dead of you want to show us. As far as should you be doing this yourself? I'd say no. Why would you risk spooking an animal so it's head is up and looking at you when you shoot.

Re: I just don\'t get it

With an .30-06 at 60 yards...lol...I wouldn't even wait for a standing shot.

Only ever grunt/bleat at a deer to stop it when archery hunting. Sharp cluck at a gobbler to get his head up. But wouldn't risk spooking an animal to "pose" for a shot. I'd rather take the shot when the animal isn't alarmed or alert.

It surely is not an educated decision to make artificial sounds to get them to look. For the viewer only.

NEVER do it to a deer unless it is needed to stop them for the ethical bow shot.

The deer surely won't run as far if it is relaxed as compared to on high alert.

You gave the best answer that anyone could have given to their six year old.

my opinon is this the only time you want to alert this animal is if you want to stop it or if you want to see if it is a mature animal dont worry about fitting in you already do my friend cool.gifcool.gifcool.gif

Re: I just don\'t get it

It's just a TV thing. Sort of makes you wonder how many times they blow an opportunity doing something like that and we never are shown their mistakes.

Would I do it with a firearm? Heck NO. I won't hardly do it with a bow unless I just have to do something to slow a quick moving deer down.

Re: I just don\'t get it

Never really thought about it before, but I had to ask myself, "Why did he do something like that?" when I was watching Jim Shockey's show earlier this week. The camera guy would snort like a pig to get the deer to lift his head up right before the shot. There was a few times when it took quite a few "pig snorts" to get the deer to stop and look up. Hit the mute button and the footage was great, but with the sound on, the hunt was ruined for the viewer when the dude was acting like he had his head in the oat trough.... confused.gif

Re: I just don\'t get it

What makes a good hunting shot and what makes good TV that will sell are two different things.

I'm still trying to figure out why it is that a TV hunter with a highpower centerfire deer rifle thinks he has to pass a deer (or bear or elk or whatever) if it's not 100% still and perfectly broadside. Whatever happened to the "quartering toward" and "quartering away" shot?? Both are what we call "bang-flop" situations...........yet TV hunting logic would have many believe a .270 or '06 or .300 Mag just won't reach the vitals from an angle. Somebody's drunk!! crazy.gif
