Got my first fly fishing fish!!

Went out at 5pm today, after I got home from working custodial. Took out the fly rod and reel I got a few weeks ago. Went to this small stream that is usually stocked with trout. Started upstream and saw tons and tons of suckers; must be spawning up there. I cast into this deep pool with suckers, slowly pull my line in and I feel something on. i reel in and find I caught myself about a 3 inch smallmouth bass! grin.gif Eventually moved downstream to a different deep pool, cast in, slowly brought my line in, and caught about a 4 inch perch! grin.gif Not exactly edible but I'm proud I was able to "inaugurate" my fly rod and reel laugh.giftongue.gif

SuperMN - it actually isn't that hard to cast. Once you learn the basics, you get the hang of it pretty quickly. At least I don't think it is that hard. I was worried about learning casting at first but once I learned the proper way, not too bad:)

congrats turkey girl on the first fish, hope your having fun with the new setup, and let me give you one thing of advice, im not sure if your wading or not sounds like your fishing from shore maybe but if you are wading or get into remember to always wade up the stream and not down, but congrats and keep up the good work

it is fun TG.

just keep with it. and remember every year that you start over, you will have to practice a little to get the stroke back. But each year it returns quicker.

I fly fished for 5 years before I went for trout.

I love gills on my 3wt. LM bass, SM bass, and nothern, salmon and steelhead are what I fish for. not a lot of trout around me.

You can catch anything with a fly rod that you can catch with a spining rod, just a little different.

It is a blast

Re: Got my first fly fishing fish!!

Thanks everyone! DU man, I do know I should wade upstream and not down, though both fish I caught, I was heading back downstream, lol. I'm assuming you wade up the stream because if you wade down, the fish are usually facing up the stream???:-) Today is going to be hot out so I think later I'll take my fly rod and go play in the famous Genesee River, a mere 10 minutes from my house, lol.

Re: Got my first fly fishing fish!!

Alright, Ruth! I got my first fly rod 'n reel tonight at Sportsman's Warehouse. My family and I are going early tomorrow morning to go camping in the Black Hills National Forest. I'll probably catch some trout tomorrow night at the KOA campground we're staying in (they have a pond there) and then Sat. afternoon they'll drop me off at my church camp and I'll see if I can't catch some trout in the stream-fed pond there with both fly rod and baitcasting w/ Power Bait. I caught 9 or 10 rainbows there last year in 3 days w/ the Power Bait! Hoping for some bigger ones to bite, you know 14" or bigger. This'll pro'ly be my last post for a while, so I'll say my goodbyes right now. See ya later everybody and wish me luck! smile.gif
